Is that before you clobber it with the mallet?

Not a chance. Our annual village fete hold a Hit-the-nail-in-the-log competition, the winner is the one who can knock a six inch nail into a seasoned log in the fewest number of swings using the wrong end of a bricklayers hammer.

Guess who wins it every year?

My record is 4 strokes.

Lucky you.

When I was doing my daily walks, I heard a woodpecker in the same tree every day, but despite spending untold time looking for it, I never once spotted it.

I did the same walk thrice daily (morning, midday & early evening) but only heard the woodpecker on the morning walk, which suggested some sort of behavioural quirk by woodpeckers. Anyone know why they only "peck" in the morning?

They definitely peck in the afternoon too. I heard one while walking on Croft and I must confess I didn't know what it was at first, the hammering was so fast it sounded more like a creak and I thought it was tree branches rubbing together on the breeze.

Eventually though, I spotted it. (no pun intended)

I did a bit of research when I got home. Apparently, they don't only peck to make holes and find food, they also drum on resonant wood to advertise their presence to others.

Plenty of woodpeckers flitting around close to the ground on Wollaton Park all year round, but they are the green ones unlike the one in doubleup's picture.

Our chaps seem to peck on trees any time they feel like it.

They probably get up late.

On that basis, you could be a full time pitched roof tester.

PS - I gather your boss won a PLO Bracelet yesterday.  Well done him.

We get both types in out garden.  The great spotted ones love gardman premium fat balls.   They had no interest in the cheaper ones or the ones my daughter made.

We have has a young one on the feeder for the last couple of days.  All my photos have been bad so far.

It says that this enormous painting is a Rubens.  I can't see any tits in it, so I'm not so sure.
