I have a great idea for a roulette party. You put 37 songs on your ipod, each song represents a number. Everyone places a bet, you hit the shuffle button and Bob's your uncle. The winners get paid, then everyone places their next bet and has a bop until the next song comes on.

Is that brilliant or what?

I'd come to that party!

I guess they can't just pour water down the pipe as they've had to put a special lubricant down it to allow supply capsules to travel down and the lube would polute the water while the water would wash away the lube

the capsules are limited in size and take something like 1/2 hour to travel down (can't actually remember how long)

Can't they stick a hosepipe down?

good question. I s'pose they've not got a hose that's long enough

now when are you having this roulette party? sounds good

Keep it quiet, or before you know it, ipoker will be using one with 52 songs on as a RNG.

This miners thing has really caught my imagination. I always did love a survival story. I'm not sure how I would cope with being trapped though.

I remember reading John McCarthy's book about the 5 years he spent as a hostage in Beirut.

The thing that terrified him the most was when they moved him to a new location, they would squeeze him in to a metal tool box that was so small he couldn't move his arms or legs, then they would throw the tool box into the back of a truck and drive to the new place, sometimes several hours away.

All the time he imagined his captors getting killed and leaving him in there to die.

I'm sure I would rather have been shot than go into that tool box.

Me too, Tom, & I've read or watched every scrap of info on it I can.

As a story, it's right up there with the Icelandic volvanic ashdebacle. Both were gripping, but mercifully, & so far, largely free of death, I think.

I have a bad vibe about the impending rescue of the Chilean miners, though. I so hope I'm wrong.

The miners have been informed that because of the narrow diameter of the planned rescue tunnel, each will have to have an 89 cm waistline to escape

Will they be sending down a tape measure and exercise plans?

They'll be sending down special 'rescue trousers'.

Blimey! They've got them on anti-depressants already. I can't imaging that's a good idea.

There is a TV programme (It's on now) called Heir Hunters, where rival companies search out the heirs to unclaimed estates. (If the estates remain unclaimed, they go to the treasury)

I understand that the "Heir Hunter" teams get a % of the estate as a finders fee, but I can't figure out how this is agreed upon.

I mean, what if the new found heir says, "No, I'd like to keep all the money thank you"?

I would imagine the heirs have to sign a contract agreeing to the finders fee before the company reveal any information.  I've seen the programme once, a fair while ago, but seem to recall that in one of the cases one of the chaps they were talking to decided to pursue his claim through a rival company, so one can only assume our 'heir hunters' were undercut

I suppose... But I'm surprised that some people don't decide to approach the treasury themselves once they learn that there is an inheritance pending.

I don't imagine it's as straightforward as that.  the relationships are often tenuous, with the heirs usually not even knowing about the existence of the relative that has died.  I don't imagine one would get very far with the treasury by rocking up saying - 'i believe someone (whose name and relationship to me I don't know) has died and i'm entitled to some cash'.  I suppose once the heir hunters show up at the door you could choose to research the information and try to work it out for yourself, but most people, I would have thought, would rather pay the admin fee to have all the relevant information quickly available.  I wonder how much they charge?
