I saw this programme a while ago, it really is excellent, especially the domestication experiment.

I wonder why the changes that go along with being bred for tameness in canines don't seem to work in felines.....

Because cats are evil?

Because dogs are stupid

Is it not just that dogs can be trained to work for humans? Traits that helped them in their various tasks are exaggerated by selective breeding, forming all the different breeds we have today.

There's not much point in selectively breeding cats if you can't get them do what you want.

A chihuahua surely can't be the result of a breeding program to provide something useful - it must have been because people just wanted a tiny dog. If that's the case, then someone somewhere would have tried to breed tiny cats.

Most miniatures were bred as hand/foot warmers weren't they? Some were also used as turnspit dogs, where they walked in big hamster wheels to turn the roast. Then of course the olden day Paris Hiltons etc got involved......

Wardonkey's already said it, but there are miniature cats - called munchkin cats.

Most domestic cats show some sign of having been bred for colour/shape at some point.

Our cat shows signs she was bred as a rottweiler, miserable cow.

A cross between a Rottie and a cow?  No wonder she's miserable!

I know a few women who fit that description.

Thought I'd post this amazing pic of the UK under snow here.  More amazing when you look at Ireland and it's lack of snow only a few miles away.

If you look very carefully somewhere near the midlands you'll see a small patch of red bricks.

This is because I bought a spade and cleared my drive yesterday.

Sorry to ruin an otherwise perfect picture.

I went for a walk on Croft hill today and took some pics of kids playing in the snow.

Yes, I did have a go.

No, the pics of that didn't come out.

Then I stopped watching the kids and turned my attention the girl in the mini-skirt in case she slipped and needed immediate assistance.

I got one of these for my mother as she is always moaning about a draft round her feet.

Mrs Red wanted one of these for Crimbo, but somehow, Santa forgot to bring her one. She is now very bitter and twisted.

QUICK!  Today is Little Christmas!  Santa can still make it up to her and have today's celebration as the cover story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Christmas

we've been celebrating epiphany today, not called little christmas here.

just before we went out 7 teens turned up at the door in various costumes, angel, a couple of monsters, one with a stable round his neck complete with nativity scene, one with a spinning star on a stick, one in drag and something else. they came into the hall and did a 15 minute long, really well rehearsed song taking us through every aspect of christ's life from birth to death and resurrection. then at the end the monsters ran around the house scaring the kids and collecting money. it really was quite unusual

as we left we saw all the local kids were out doing the same thing in various sized groups all around the village

then we got to the local town where we were having our epiphany dinner, 18 courses each accompanied by a shot of vodka, I'd imagine this part is similar to the irish version

had a couple of groups of kids show up singing at the door who all went away happy with the money they were given. then a group of 5 old girls turned up and did a much more traditional carol type performance with cowbell accompaniment. when they'd finished they got invited in for vodka, chocolate, cake and then more vodka then gave us another song as they left. a most interesting way to spend the evening
