Then I'm off down le fumée for two days, so no weigh-in on Friday morning.

Another suggestion for saving the expenses: http://www.tunehotels.com/our-hotels/westminster-london. It's an ex-office building that opened as a hotel in November. I've stayed there three times now and I'm there for the next two nights as well. Rooms are cupboard- shoebox- matchbox-sized (seriously, if there were two of you sharing one would have to stay in bed whilst the other dressed) but it's clean, comfortable, quiet, has decent showers and is 20 yards from a tube station. And for £60/night without having to book six months in advance, it's a bargain for Central London.

Haha. That's standard procedure in a caravan. Typically the man gets up and goes for a walk while the woman "Gets Done" and puts the beds away.

In these days of modern caravans, or "trailers" as we call them, we have a bit more room to play with, but I still struggle to understand it when I hear people say, "We're expecting a baby and this house is too small, we'll have to move"

Thanks for the tip Mr L, but luckily, I know a man at the Royal National on Bedford way, so I get a wee discount.

Royal National Hotel, near Russell Square? Ooh, hark at him!

They do lovely fried breakfasts there, Tom.

PS - Welcome back to the 13's.

Yes. They've just re-furbed the dining room too, so now it's even nicer to look at longingly.

Tom,

If you get a moment on Friday, have a wander around nearby Russell Square, you will love it. (You may alrerady know it).

What a mix of history & buildings it has.

Everything from T S Eliot, The Duke of Bedford, to a really fascinating "Cabbies Shelter", which is quaint & very 1950-ish.

I have had a wander, but I will do so again now that I've read a little of it's history.

Things are so much more interesting if you have a bit of background information. If I'm ever in an unfamiliar city with time to spare, I love to take an open top bus tour. They're great value for money. Go around once, listening to the commentary. then go around again, getting off at the bits that interest you most.

Do the Newcastle one if you ever get the chance. It's amazing.

This.

And it's why Wiki has become my 2nd most visited Website, it's an astonishingly good resource, & totally free. I know it gets knocked a bit because it's not always 100% accurate, but people who read stuff ought to question stuff they read as a matter of course anyway. It's largely accurate, certainly enough to get the sort of info I crave. You could educate a kid (life-skills excepted) on Wiki, you really could. Imagine how valuable it is to those in the less-developed countries who can get internet access, but no formal schooling.

PS - Of all the awe & majesty of Russell Square, the Cabbies shelter will be the highlight. If you can find an aged cabbie outside the shelter to chat to, he'll invite you in, make you a proper cup of tea, & you'll be richly entertained.

I wish that were true of people who read newspapers, or watch telly, I really do.

I will try to have a look (and take a picture) inside the Cabbie's shelter, time permitting.

I believe Wikipedia applied for charitable status on exactly that basis.

They were turned down.

The default sense or thought to anything we read, see, or hear, should be (imo), "does that sound right, do I really believe that, does it add up, do they have an angle"?

Correct. I think it was rejected on some sort of technicality.

I just know it's free, & one of the greatest educational tools & archives of our age, available to anyone who has access to the internet. I think that's an awesome justification for the very existence of the internet.
