On the subject of Gypsies and integration I caught a small part of this on TV the other night - looked interesting.

Trailers I saw for this referred to
R
oma
g
ypsies - does this have a specific significance, and is the capitalisation appropriate (for want of a better word)

Just caught the start of a program on Radio 4, unfortunately had to get out of the car and missed the rest!
One of the guests is Eva Petulengro, she is a Romany and offers an explanation of the difference between Romany and Gypsy. I think that it is being repeated at 9.30 tonight. The other guests appear to be very interesting too.

Hi David, The wiki page linked below gives a reasonable explanation.
No. The capitalisation is inappropriate. you've spelled Gypsy with a lower case G

Petulengro is actually Romani for Smith. "Petule" is the word for horse-shoe, and "engro" is the verb part.
So it sort of translates as "Doing horse-shoes" i.e. Smith.
Does that make sense?

Yes.
Just as an aside, If I suspected that someone was a Gypsy but wasn't quite sure, I would move close and whisper
"Romanichal?"
and would expect to hear something like "
Avli"
or "
Owli"
in reply.
