I was surprised by the regard given to anyone connected to the military in the US.

Several times during poker games, it slipped out in conversation that a a player was either active or ex armed forces, whereupon everyone present shook their hand and solemnly thanked them for their service.

As a joke, I solemnly thanked one aged about 23 for saving our asses in WWII. Without even a flicker or a smile from him or anyone else at the table he replied, "You're wecome".

Yep, you're not thanking the man..You're thanking the army he serves in. All the same to him.

Of course, but it was surprising that my remark was received with total solemnity and sincerity.

Be careful Tom.  Use of irony in a public place is an indictable offence in 47 states.

I asked Mrs Red what she thought of Vegas and she said she loved it. "Its so posh and yet so inexpensive ".

She's right too. Our room at the Nugget cost $39 and was very big plush and well equipped. Our room in SF was clean, but very small and basic and cost $100. (Not that we mind small and basic BTW).

In Vegas we ate stake and eggs at breakfast and prime rib in fancy restaurants at dinner.

In San Francisco we ate on the street in Chinatown or from quayside food stalls with the trawler men on Fisherman's Wharf. It's difficult From say which I enjoyed the most.

San Francisco was unforgettable. Alcatraz, the bridge, the hills, the cable cars, the bay, the buildings, the people, the nudity...

When we were at Seaworld for the whale show, prior to it starting a guy comes on the mike and asked for all US & UK military to please stand, then eveyone applauds them etc etc. Needless to say Darren remained firmly in his seat as it's just not the way he rolls.

One side of a US cell phone conversation.

....and I was like, "No way" and he wan like, "Way" and I was like, "Wow!" and he was like, "Uh hu"....

That sounds like "valley-girl" talk, she must have been from LA.

He should be safe, they have to get it first before indictment.

Wasn't it great? You could really feel the desperation.

They locked a few if us in a punishment cell called "The Hole". It was absolutely pitch black. After a few moments in the darkness I piped up, "Anyone got any smokes?" and a deep scary voice hissed back, "what'll ya trade for em?"

It's such a compact city too. From Alcatraz,  it looks like it is painted on the lid of a biscuit tin.

If must have been torture for the inmates to see it, just a mile or so away.

Mile and a half to swim

San Francisco is one of the places I want to go to at some point - but there are a few places that are higher up on my list first, so it might take me some time before I actually make it there

I think its supposed to cost $2 to ride the cable cars, but we were never asked to pay a fare and nor was anyone else as far as we could tell.

It only travels at a fast walking pace and people just jump on an off.
