Goldfinches, greenfinches and Siskins it eat apparently.

Yes, they would eat niger, any finch would, but this is sprinkled on to spikey teasel heads.

I don't think a greenfinch would have the necessary skills.  A siskin might, but I haven't seen one around here for ages.

So, now they have sussed where to find it, presumably they will return?

Have you got the lappie ready, with the recorded call?

The call is to show them where to find it. If they have already found it, we won't need the call.

Do keep up.

Why don't the greenfinches have the same skills? What's the difference between the two (other than colour)?

The establishment looks after its own Red.

While the Cardiff 3 on release will have had to sue for compensation, then when they got it, the cost of their accommodation and food while in prison will have been deducted from them.

And quite right too..being taken care off whilst in jail is a privilege, not a human right.

Seriously, the deduction of accomodation and food costs has always disgusted me..a completely dispicable rule.

it's kinda baffling. obv people are going to object to it so why don't they deduct it before making the award and then no-one would be any the wiser. to make an award and then take some back is just asking for trouble

Well something is definitely taking the niger seed. I'm sure it must be goldfinches, but whatever it is will surely be worth seeling.

So the next step it to see the diner having his dinner, and hopefully, encourage him to be a regular visitor.

I say 'him', but really it should be 'them'. Finches flock together outside of the breeding season.

The collective name for a flock of goldfinches is a 'charm'.

I would also like a photograph, but birds are notoriously difficult, and I'm no Woodsey.

I've not seen a siskin since one flew through the draught-stopper in my letter-box a couple of years ago.

Greenfinches are a bigger, heavier bird with a short, powerful beak for cracking tough seeds. Goldfinches are lighter and have a long slim beak for extracting seeds from the heads of teasel and thistle.

There are also differences in the legs and claws, but you get the drift.

Tease 'l

It was used for raising the nap on fabrics. "Teasing it up" as it were.

I don't know whether we got the word 'Teasing' from teasel or if teasel was named after 'Teasing"
