I'd accept being wrong for the joy of a deity lightning bolting them and a big voice saying 'BAD CALL'.
pretty sure if god exists he'll use his bolts on the ones who worship cows or say that he told them to cut off bits of their dicks rather than the ones that use the brain he gave them.
Hmmm.... or those who go to war to spread their religion? I'd think very little of a God who was more concerned about worshiping cows or circumcision tbh. Hinduism & Judaism are 2 of the less objectionable religions IMO. (Drawing a distinction between Judaism and Zionism obv.)
Judaism isn't the only religion that maintains that God instructs that circumcision should take place.

True, point still stands your things for god to get upset about are fairly meaningless.

Can someone detail why Dawkins and Minchin (and me apparently) are 'religious' with our views?
Isn't religion, and being religious, "reverence towards god(s)", where the central dictum is faith?
I'd say it's a shorthand for the level of outward expression of their beliefs. Would you prefer obsessive or fanatical ?
Obsessive is fine. Fanatical probably misses the mark as well imo.
obsessive it is then
I'd also stress that 'beliefs' is probably the wrong term too
Obsessive doesn't cover it - I meant they encapsulate some of the worst of religious fervor in their insistance on disparaging anything associated with religion.
I'd also stress that beliefs IS the right term, just they've more evidence behind theirs.
They don't remand anyone does anything though? They're merely voicing their opinions, as others are allowed to. Religious includes the 'privilege' of religion.
I think beliefs is the wrong word, because different meanings of the word will be confused, the same way as 'theory' is misrepresented quite often when referring to scientific theories.
Yes, they do. They demand that people agree with them. They use cruel ignorant arguments to do it as well. There is NO purpose in telling people who find help/solace in religion that they are 'sucking on dummies' it doesn't advance their argument, it just demeans it. Again, as I said they encapsulate the worst of religious fervor.
I'd also ask what word you'd use instead of beliefs?
Can you give me an example of where either demands someone does something (other than not infringe on the rights of others)?

I don't think they suffer from skid marks.

This is Sarah Burke, four times winter x games freestyle skiing champion. She died yesterday from injuries she sustained after crashing during a training run. She was 29.

It made me wonder how young ladies become involved in such a dangerous sport in the first place, and that in turn lead me to thinking about other dangerous sports. Boxing, motor racing, mountaineering etc.
I remember listening to an interview with Chris Bonington. He said that climbing had taken him all over the world and given him a wonderful life. He said he understood the risks and fully accepted them, and I believed him.
Now this is where it gets a bit crazy, (Which is OK because it was all happening in the privacy of my own head) but if you could travel the world doing what you wanted to do. (playing poker for instance) and earn a lot of money/fame/ trophies/WE in the process, how much risk would you accept for the privilege?
One in a thousand each time you compete? That means you have 1000 little white tablets to choose from. 999 are safe, one contains a lethal dose of cyanide.
Would you risk more than than, say one in 500, or would it have to be much more?
Sounds stupid I know, but aren't these the kind of choices that high-risk sportsmen and women are making all the time?

I think powerboat racing and showjumping are amongst the most dangerous sports in terms of fatalities. Read it in a newspaper once, so it must be true.
Gatters will confirm.
It's a shame about that skier, but at least she was doing something she loved. How many people die in road accidents on the way to a job they hate? Maybe they're a sadder story?

I once overtook Paul Daniels and Debbie Mcgee in a traffic jam on the M6. They were in a Bentley and I was in a Transit lorry with a load of scrap iron on the back.
Their lane was stationary, mine was doing about 5mph so I passed them very slowly.
I waved at them and they both waved back enthusiastically and continued waving until I was out of sight.
