5 miles worth of Warwickshire, Baddesley Ensor being done tomorrow.  He's taking a day off work for it this time.  God help me.  Wanna go?

I've started a little 'Just for fun' project where I keep my best example picture of each different bird species I manage to photograph in a separate 'Bird' folder on my computer.

So far I only have a few, and some of them are not very good.

I'm only allowed the one picture of each gender of each species, but I'm allowed to swap it for a better example if I manage to get one.

It's like a little collection. This is what I have so far.

Blackbird
Blue tit
Chaffinch
Claw bird
Dunnock
Goldfinch
Great spotted woodpecker
Great tit
Greenfinch
Jackdaw
Long tail tit
Mallard
Mistle thrush
Partridge
Pheasant
Robin
Wood pigeon.

What I was wondering was, should we have a similar thread for the camera/wildlife enthusiasts on blonde where we collectively try to photograph as many different species as we can. One pic of each species, arranged in alphabetical order. New species go in automatically, better examples of existing species replace old ones.

We already have a reasonable amount between us, anyone could contribute.

What do you think?

Sounds good Red. I'll need to go through the pics I've got then - think I've a couple not in the list (kestrel & red-legged partridge).

Geo's got the Moorhen  & Dipper, and Tikay's got the black-headed gull.

There's also the red-legged thingys, and the gulls, the swan, Woodsey had some bee-eaters, and Milligan had a kingfisher...

My stuff is pretty run of the mill, but they're all just as important if we're trying to get a comprehensive list.

We will never really scratch the surface of course, but it will be fun trying to get something new.

Gonna have me out chasing the Barn Owls aroundthe place trying to get them close enough to get a recognisable picture Cheesy

Had  an incident the other day that convinced me I'll never make a wildlife photographer... Dad shouted me through to the kitchen, there were a pair of buzzards doing their courtship flights about 50 yards from the back of the house, we both stood spellbound for a couple of minutes till another buzzard tried to cut in. FINALLY I thought 'camera!!' and we both took off through the house looking for our cameras. of course they were half a mile away by the time we came back through. I'll just have to accept that I've to be grateful for the pictures I do get, and hope that the mental pictures stay sharp for a long time.

Cheers Guy.

I would love to have a go.

When I was a boy I used to go into a brick yard er...   outside of office hours and borrow a piece of re-enforcing bar. Then I would use their electric guillotine to cut it to length and fashion a point.

I remember my Grandad saying as he looked for a can to fetch some petrol in, "Jesus Christ! Is there nothing left around here that isn't riddled with fucking spear-holes?".

I shall take this opportunity to share with you one of my favourite possessions, my beautiful Sami knife.

My hubby bought this knife quite a few years ago from a man who had picked it up at an antique market. He was told it was a home made knife, probably made by a farm hand in Ireland
(I think they assumed that because of the shamrock type pattern) He didn't pay a lot and didn't rate it that much.
I, on the other hand, instantly fell in love with it. I didn't buy the "farm hand" thing because the craftsmanship is stunning. The photo's dont do it justice, but if you look closely you can see
the whole thing is held together by just a few tiny copper pins and some rawhide stiches.
The handle alone comprises thirteen pieces of wood and bone and seems to be fused to the shank by magic.
Everything about is so simple but yet so precise and fits together almost seamlessly.
You can just tell whoever made it really knew his stuff, its a pleasure just to hold it.
Anyway, after a lot of research I was finally told it was made by the Sami people of lapland,
and the are considered a artform. Apparently there is a database where you can identify individual craftsmen (a lot of these knives are initialled, as mine is) but I hit a brick wall with this
as the Sami seem to be a very private people, access is denied to the few websites I have found,
but I hope to be able to do this one day.

It certainly looks Scandinavian Redsgirl. I'll ask some folks on another forum (which includes a Finnish knifemaker) for their opinions. What are the initials? I can't see them in the pics.

A lovely bit of craftsmanship whatever the provenance.

Edit - One suggestion is that it's Northern Sami, because of the angle of the 'J'.

The top one on this pic is Northern, the bottom Southern:
