Hi Tom, welcome back. I quite often see ' grinding bikes' in India.
It really is like going back in time here sometimes, neighbours chatting to each whilst watching their children play happily in the street , kids playing cricket in the street with home made bats without a care in the world. Lots of good memories of my childhood come flooding back when I see these simple sights

Incidently Tom I posted about Jays in our garden on page 1286 of your diary whilst you were AWOL. Doubleup gave us an insight as to why they were appearing on the next page.

Thanks for the update on the grinding bike Red. Lovely tale.

BTW here's the modern equivalent......

About £100.

Gives a really good edge but not as good looking and it doesn't come with somewhere to sit ;-)

Very very good Tom. I remember you posting about the grinding bike when your Dad was building it. I used to live next door butone to my Nan and remember her taking knives out to a fella with one in the sixties.

On the subject of bikes I remember being too small to cock my leg over some of the older boys bikes, and not being able to touch the floor with my feet. I got over this problem by putting one leg through the middle of the frame to reach the pedal on the other side and rode it like that, sort of side saddle only standing all the time. Funny how your bike story whipped that up from my memory bank.

Lol. Sometimes we would get adult sized bikes in the scrap and I would ride em like that too.

I remember once we got an absolutely enormous one. My Grandad said it was a muskerer's (policeman's) bike. I had the bright idea of cutting the crossbar off with a hacksaw. It worked very well, until I hit a pot hole.

A passing business man pulled me from the wreckage. I bet his name was Mr Brompton.

Great pics Kev. Aren't they a beautiful bird?  Nice follow up piece from Doubleup too.

I just love the crow family. If I ever get reincarnated, I want to come back as a jackdaw. (I promise I wouldn't perch on Susanna Reid's bedroom windowsill.)

I bet you can't sharpen a shovel with it, or use it to fetch a bag of coal.

Nice to hear from you Rod. How are you keeping? (Long version please.)

I worked for the last 3 1/2 yrs in Goa ,India but currently back in UK for Xmas with the family.  Internal flights can be very cheap in India, so you can easily visit other places if you wished.

This is the kind of 'Grinding Bike ' I normally see. This photo isn't in Goa though, probably Mumbai by the looks of it.

What a great pic!

I love how he's sitting on the carrier behind the seat to give himself extra room.

Great link. Thanks Guy.

It amazes me how they get things like that into orbit. it weighs 2 tons FFS!

I like the way they talk about "cloud-free" images.  Look at the UK in that image...clouds!
