Thanks.

I set my fb stuff to friends only seeing my profile, and what I post and culled the friends list substantially. since I did that no hassle at all - i used to get some from troublemakers.
Far far far prefer twitter, but facebook keeps me in touch with some people, I often find my kids on there when I need them and there is the occasional gem on there too

A few of whom have become quite good friends. But yes you're right mostly acquaintances.

Thanks.
it's ridic though.
anyone I speak to in real life with any regularity I don't think i've ever spoken to on facebook.
people you lose contact with etc it's great for, but it's depressing having zuckerburg try and impose us on what he thinks we want, what he thinks we use the internet for. the number of people who add me who I have ZERO knowledge of who they are is immense. google tried to point this phenomenon out with their google plus phrases but ldo they didn't start off with 1 billion users.
all these people with >1k friends, it's like really, tell me >4 of their middle names, tell me how many of those you can 'rely' on. tis just really annoying having the word friend used so widely and incorrectly especially with so much stuff coming about as advertising and as business orientated on fb now.
obv at it's nadir when only universities had it, it was awesome. tis utter shite now.

I use it to keep in touch with my family a lot, share stories we're all interested in, etc. Means I get to speak to my mum and dad everyday about all sorts of stuff (I generally speak to them on the phone every other day anyway) and they can share what they're doing.
Most of the stuff we share isn't in the public domain, it's restricted to a group that no one else can see.
When 'friends' post stuff that I don't like (that's unbelievably mundane and frequent, is racist or overly religious, or just plain daft, etc.) then I either de-friend or simply block their posts from appearing in my news feed.
People who say facebook or twitter is full of rubbish and people posting about what they had for lunch or other nonsense need to realise that it's them who 'created' their own facebook world or twitterverse (or whatever the term is). As Rich said, twitter is great because you follow and see what you want to see from the people who interest you. Facebook is a bit less flexible as it's people you know (which is what they use the word 'friend' to mean), but you still get to mute the stuff you don't want to see. It's like someone complaining that Eastenders is depressing and boring - and then watching every episode!

Thanks to everyone for their input on this.
Let me try to be a little clearer.
I want somewhere that I can post personal stuff that only selected people can see or comment on.
Ideally, I would like it if everyone else didn't even know it existed.

Is Google Cloud (circles) any good to you? Think that's a bit less of a compulso-share job.

ROWS and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
