There you go.

That's it precisely.

How do you even know that?

According to wiki it's known as moronic interrogation...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_rising_terminal

Yes. That's the rising intonation that I was talking about. It's the opposite of that.

Moronic interrogation eh? You gotta love that term.

You'd be surprised at the depth of my knowledge on such matters.

The moment you made the Post, the Britney example spring to mind.

So I'm in London at the moment. I had a nice relaxed informal meeting over dinner, and I have a tense and twitchy all day conference tomorrow, a few odds and sods at home on Saturday morning,  then, barring hiccups, I'm free in the afternoon.

On the train coming down, I had the good fortune to share a table with three rather attractive 20 something American students. We spent a pleasant 15 minutes or so comparing accents, as you do, and then moved on to more serious stuff, work, family, ambitions etc.

I was struck by how mature and savvy they were. They impressed me a great deal.

One thing in particular stood out though, and I've noticed this more and more in young ladies, especially over the last year or so. When they talk, and they come to the end of a sentence, their voice becomes a croak. Well, not a croak exactly, more of a creak, like a rusty hinge.

I don't know if I'm explaining this very well.

You know how an Australian's voice goes up a few octaves at the end of a sentence, well this is the complete opposite of that.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I was in London today as well.  Didn't see you though.

I'm in the Royal Hotel on Bedford Way.

I will be walking to Elland House tomorrow. I think it's about 5 miles so I'm allowing a good hour.

Keep your eye out for me coming down The Mall at ~ 08:30.

Where are they from?

Michigan. (I hope that's how you spell it)

That's how you spell it.  Hmmmmm...I'm from Ohio and it's only the next state over.  Do I sound like them?  Just asked Jack and he says my tone varies.  Then we listened to the Britney clip.  Nope.  Definitely don't do that.  Maybe it's just an age thing.  Something the kids have picked up these days.

I am not surprised by the depth of your knowledge when it involves scantily clad young ladies cavorting around.

My girls aren't talking like that.  Yet.  They'll get an earful if they start though!

Do you ever play at the Vic when you're in London Tom? I think the £1/£1 game would suit you very well.

It is a modern thing Tom. Like "like".

Today was, like, good.

Kids are VERY impressionable, without realising it.

They demand independence......then all copy each other. Wink

How many times have you seen, on this Forum, "sick", "gross spot", "soft tourney" & the like? Read 2+2, adopt the lingo, & everyone becomes a moron or a genius, there are no in-betweens. It is all extremes. "Not bad" & "quite good" no longer exist. Shite or brilliant.

And so, Britney records BOMT, & all the girls start that growling thing. Cool, 'innit?

I fell out with the Vic quite a number of years ago David, and I haven't been back since.

I am told that it is considerably better than it used to be though.

I reckon you'll need more than an hour - a good hour may be long enough though, depends just how good it is I spose. I'd say 3½ mph is a steady but not dawdling walk, 4 mph is brisk and 4½ mph is hell for leather and 5 mph is barely achievable. If I knew the route and it was 5 miles maximum, I'd reckon on 4 mph and allow 1¼ hours.

Of course we were the same, all kids of all generations are.

In my youth, kids DEMANDED to be their own people, then we all copied the long hair exhibited by the Beatles & Stones, & we ALL wanted a Mini, and flared jeans.
