The walruses scientific name, 'Odobenus rosmarus', is Latin for 'tooth-walking sea-horse'. When the walrus uses its prominent tusks to pull its bulk from the ocean onto pack ice, the process looks like the walrus is walking on its tusks, hence the name.

A walrus can remain under water for up to 30 minutes before coming up for air.

The walrus' whiskers are not hairs, but actually extremely sensitive, tactile organs, much like a cat's whiskers. The walrus uses these whiskers to help find food.

"The butter's spread too thick!"

"I weep for you," the Walrus said:

With sobs and tears he sorted out

Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
