Very weak force, gravity. The magnetic forces in the magnet keep it stuck to the shiny car while the gravity of the Earth itself is tugging it as hard as it can...and so is Mr Red Dog.

Hold the magnet in your hand, then let go. Gravity wins evey time.

And while we're on the subject, I have a magnet that is about the size of two poker chips. It may be small, but it's incredibly powerful. I mean so powerful that if I stuck it on your car, you wouldn't be able to remove it without causing damage to the vehicle.
I
How does so much power manage to remain in there, just waiting for me to use it, how does it manage to be reuseable, and how does it manage to cling on to something with such force and remain there, for a thousand years if necessary, until I prise it off?

It's like I'm getting something for nothing. If there was a way to switch the power on and off, it would be the key to perpetual motion.

Yes, very clever & interesting, but surely no more clever or interesting a force than.........gravity?

Gravity is, I find, like a VW Golf, you can generally rely on it. Far more versatile & widespread than magnetic forces, too.

As a kid, I was endlessly fascinated by magnets, & played with them endlessly. Best toy ever.

Yes but gravity is directly proportional to mass, so it's sort of understandable.

My 6oz magnet will lift 50lbs

Gravity holds everything, no matter how heavy.

If you think about these invisible forces, they are quite amazing.

Think of a ship. Gravity forces it down, & water forces it up, & they remain in perfect balance. How clever is that?

It's not a perfect balance, unless the water is literally lapping over the gunwales it is exerting a much stronger force on the ship.

In fact, you could add several hundred ten tonne containers to the ship and the power of the water would still have enough leeway to support it.

Why doesn't gravity pyll a steel washer off a magnet then?

My magnet also has a gravitational pull, but it is about a billion times weaker than it's magnetic pull.

What about the forces that hold atoms together?

When the bomb dropped on Hiroshima released the massive amount of destructive energy that it obliterated much of the city in seconds, only 600 milligrams of matter was turned into energy. That's a tenth of the mass of a ten pence piece!

Really Kin? Such a tiny amount.

Why did they need such a big bomb to deliver it?

When they first did it, how did they know how much matter to use, and how did they know that all the surrounding matter wouldn't explode in a chain reaction?

It's not easy for us to 'control' nuclear reactions like this. It's also why nuclear power is so fraught with problems. But it also shows how little matter is required to produce the energy, compared to fossil fuels that use chemical reactions, rather than nuclear.

If only we could work out a way to utilise fusion in a controlled environment, 'cold fusion' would be the answer to our energy problems.

Fascinating stuff, cheers Kin.

Perfect balance.... gravity stronger than magnetism.... That Kendall really does talk bollocks sometimes.

I wouldn't mind but he doesn't even think about it, he just posts the first thing that comes into his head and then defends it as if it was Gospel.

Stubborn see.

I don't bother arguing with you now, you never admit you are wrong.

Here's something a bit more interesting, to brighten up your Diary.

Well I'm stranded for a few hours,  but I've been stranded in far less interesting places.

Where am I?
