Hope your not scared of heights,  i nearly shit myself driving through the Alps in a car, would prbably pass out if i was on a bike lol.

Are summer temperatures reasonable?

Gets cold at night. I rememeber camping a few years back and we got totally caught out by the cold and froze our tits off. I think we put on every item of clothes we had with us and were still cold, barely got a wink of sleep.

If you do go Tom, try & visit Geneva, & Lake Geneva generally.

I was there last month, & loved the place. Got a little cog driven train from Montreaux up to the top, or nearly so, of an Alpy mountain, deep snow, beautiful views, it was wonderful.

The Lake is some 60 miles long, & fringed by snow-topped mountains, it's a very special place.

Expensive, mind.

Expensive? What, the whole country or just that bit?

I only visited Geneva, Montreaux & Lausanne, but they were all fearfully pricey.

Cant remember the exact month, but deffo summer jun-sept time. Just cold at altitude, we came down after that night and were fine. Bear in mind we put no thought into it and just rocked up with standard sleeping bags that we had at home. We might just have got unlucky with an unusually cold night i dunno, but you should deffo do a bit of research about typical temperatures up there rather than pitch up unprepared like we did.

Cheers Andrew.

Mind you, I suspect Rod would be quite happy to have a few inches frozen off his tits...

Motorcycle news.

My brother John had become interested in doing the European adventure and has bought himself a 125 Yammy.

Like me and Rod, he is starting at the very beginning so will be doing his CBT sometime soon.

He says he fancies Switzerland for an initial trip, which sounds OK to me. I've always wanted to ride over an alp.

Another question that comes to mind, how much more difficult is it training Poppy if someone else has had her fora  while before you?

Sometimes quite a bit, depending on who has had the dog and what they tried and failed to teach it.

Fortunately no one has ever tried to teach this dog anything so we're virtually starting from scratch.

So far she is 100% on recall, but I've only called her name twice, both times when she was definitely coming to me anyway.

We have also got a decent handle on the NO command, mainly by saying it in a stern tone at just the right moment whilst lifting my knee to knock her off balance when she jumps up me. She doesn't associate landing on her back with me lifting my knee, she sees it as a consequence of jumping up. After a couple of uncomfortable landings, the NO command without the knee was sufficient to make her pull back mid jump.

When I first got Kizzy she wandered off down the lane to where my gate is. There she was picked up by an old lady and taken home.
when I missed her I started asking around and was told that this woman had her. When I went to her house she didn't want to give the dog back because she had already called the warden.

I eventually managed to coax her into giving her back and as I left she gave me this advice.

"Keep a closer eye on her young man, when I found her she was in that field with the Gypsies".

I immediately set about teaching Kizzy not to go near the gate again. I did it by hiding near the gate and waiting until she came close, then I jumped out, screaming like a banshee and banging two pans together. This and a handful of gravel peppering her retreating bum convinced Kizzy that the gate was a dangerous place. she has never been back there in 7 years.

A couple of days ago I repeated the exercise with Poppy and it worked like a charm again. She follows me everywhere but if I head towards the gate she turns back.

I'll do a little vid to show you.

Can I borrow you for whenever I'm planning a river bluff?

We cured Martha of jumping up at everyone with one of these. It's just air, and after a couple of experiences of it she now greets people politely and from ground level.

You have had Kizzy SEVEN YEARS?

My oh my, I had it as about 3 years.

How is her (left?) rear leg now? Did the problem go away, or stabilise?
