Saw a tiny creature sitting on the side of the chalet. It seemed to be moving in an unusual way so I went to investigate.
It wasn't a tiny creature, it was a load of itty bitty spiders, each one about the size of a grain of sugar.

How old is Ronnie BTW? He must be around 7ish?
I wish.
He's 9 now and will be 10 in September.
Starting to get to that worrying age for a large breed but other than taking much shorter walks these days he seems healthy and happy as ever.
I have to say I'm a huge fan of old dogs having now got one. I'm pretty sure my next dog will be an old Rottie from a rescue. They really struggle finding home for old dogs and I think it's be really rewarding to give a happy home to an older dog for his/her final few years.

Arachnophobes look away now.
In temperate regions, there are ~ 1000000 spiders on any given acre of land, this figure rises to 3000000 in the tropics.

Blimey, 10 years... Where did that go?
My next question was going to be will you have another dog when Ronnie has gone?
Rescue dogs can be challenging, they are usually looking for a new home for a reason. That said, the reason older dogs need a new home is often because the owner has died or their life circumstances have changed.
I think you could handle a difficult dog anyway. IMO you're one of the few that really 'get it' when it comes to dog behaviour.
A friend on mine adopted a 7yo ex brood bitch, a Tibetan terrier. She's 11 now and fit as a fiddle.

Arachnophobes, you can look now.
The bite of the Brazilian wandering spider can cause long and painful erections, as well as other symptoms.

This has been born out of necessity unfortunately as Ronnie was incredibly difficult in his early years. It's possible that my inexperience whilst he was very young is what made him what he was when he became more mature and meant I had to become better myself.
There's so many things I'd do differently if I had another young dog. I'm not saying I have regrets with Ronnie because he's absolutely amazing. I can't imagine another dog being easier in the home than Ronnie. He's incredibly low maintenance.
I'd be very careful if I rehomed a dog. There are several impressive looking rescue places for Rotties and I'd almost certainly go to one of them. Unfortunately I'd have to steer clear of places like the RSPCA. I know of a friend who was given a dog that really shouldn't have gone to him. She was downright aggressive and I can't see how she could be sent to an inexperienced home. They either didn't assess her properly, didn't assess my friend properly or just didn't care. I suspect the third.
I agree about the older dogs and their reasons for rehoming. I think with the larger breeds you also have a better chance of getting a good one. Many people buy them without realising what it takes to own one. A perfectly lovely Rottweiler or German Shepard can seem like a handful because of its sheer size. People home them in a flat not realising that they need a 4 mile walk every day. Put that dog in the right surroundings and they'll be fine.
If only people would research a little more before committing to a breed. There's a suitable dog for pretty much every situation.

Thanks guys.
Diaries need feedback, questions, participation, otherwise it's just like waving a walking stick in St Paul's Cathedral.
Oh wait, that quote is for a different situation entirely.

St Paul's is just behind our office. I will give this a go tomorrow lunchtime and report back.

Just an observation.
Personality/mentality wise, I don't think there's very much difference between Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler. I just hope people aren't looking back in 70 years and asking, "How did it happen?"

I think Trump is using racism to gather support, Hitler was mad raving murderously crazy. Trump is playing the race card to gain idiot votes, much like some of our politicians sadly.

Hitler didn't seem mad raving murderously crazy in the beginning...

I am not sure which is worse, Trump being himself and that he may get elected or Trump saying and doing these things in a calculated fashion to get elected. Both scenario's are incredibly scary should he actually get elected.

Actually the main similarity I see is the "make America/Germany great again" polemic.

Polemic smacks more of being articulate than good in a knife fight.
Then again, if you look at the definition....

True, but Hitler seemed driven by ideals (bad ones) - Trump is just a greedy arsehole.
I certainly hope I'm right, can see the similarities & am worried for the USA and the world if he were to gain power. Sadly about as worried for the world if Clinton gets in, she's not much better.
