I played a few holes of golf at Wollaton Park GC today with my mate Barry and it was pretty warm as I'm sure it was down your way.
On the first hole I noticed a couple of crows/jackdaws sitting in a sand-bunker with wings spread and beaks open as though they were sunbathing like lizards.
We saw a few more on the way round our nine holes and they were all sitting in the sun rather than the shade despite the heat, all with beaks open.
Unfortunately I didn't have my phone/camera with me but I've never observed this behaviour before and I'm sure I'd have noticed.

Lots of birds do that, Ralph, it helps their plumage, and gets rid of parasites and tics.

They do it on ant nests as well, the formic acid helps fumigate their plumage.

Morning Tom.
Uncle Ralph posted this photo on my Twitter thing, don't know where he found it, but a fascinating photograph.
Any idea when (what year) the photo was taken?

I retweeted it to my many thousands* of followers from an "Old London" site that I follow @oldlondon or somesuch on Twitter who post all manner of interesting period p;ictures.
It said that it was a protest at Westminister in 1968.

In 1968 the Caravan Sites act came into force. Local councils were directed to provide sites for the Gypsy population in their catchment area.
In anticipation of this all the traditional stopping places, commons, back lanes, wide roadside verges etc that Gypsies had resorted to for generations were trenched, fenced or bunded off and any Gypsies currently in residence removed by force.
The problem was, the sites never appeared, and the government didn't do anything about it, the result was thousands of families with nowhere to go and a huge rise in mass trespass on inappropriate locations - industrial estates, recreation grounds, supermarket car parks etc.
I suspect the protest had less to do with children's education and more to do with highlighting the lack of somewhere legal to stop.

It must have been terrible to be treated with such disdain.
PS That's the first time I've seen the word "perforce" in print since reading "Wandering"

We flew home today into East Midlands airport. Just as we cleared customs we were stopped by an official looking chap who sad he would like to ask us a few questions. I thought he was a customs officer but he explained that he was from the government office of statistics and was stopping every 10th person to do a quick survey.
Q- Where do you live? A- Europe.
Q- Where in Europe? A- Leicestershire.
Q- How did you vote in the Referendum? A- Remain.
Q Really? Why? A- Because I like being part of the EU, I think a world without borders would be fantastic.
Him- Hmm... I bet the refugees would like that too.
I was very surprised to see someone in his position offering opinions. God knows what 'anonymous' answers he was writing on his pad. I demanded to see his boss and relayed the conversation to him. He was gobsmacked.

Where did you go for your holiday, Tom? Just you & Mrs Red?
Enjoyable?

I know it is a bit simplistic, but that has always been a dream of mine, God/Nature/whatever never intended that there should be borders, & one way & another, most wars & unrest seems to be caused by either borders &/or religion.
I was in Vegas when the "OUT" vote happened, & it was such a terrible shock, it seemed to me we are going backwards, not forwards. A really sad thing, imo. Quite depressing, overall.

Just had a peruse of that site, Ralph, some fabulous photographs on there.
For anyone interested, the name of the Twitter Feed is @GreatestCapital. Well worth a gander.
Tighty would enjoy it, too, it has photographs of most of the London football grounds from back in the day.
Here's Highbury, before Lord Wenger weaved his magic.

Yes, it's mainly (99%) for work purposes - when I write an article or Blog, I promote it on there, & then Sky Poker, Sky Bet & a bunch of friends pick it up & retweet it. The page is Sky Poker branded. It was actually very busy whilst I was in Vegas, with a lot of interaction. The whole idea of the blogs etc is, of course, SEO based, so they are written in a particular style & format. Not what you & I would much enjoy reading, tbh, but essentially the stuff is written to order, & gets uploaded on either SkySports.com or SkyPoker.com.
Ralph does not normally post photographs on my Twitter account, no, don't recall him ever doing so before, but on this occasion he asked me to re-tweet the photo, which was why I posted it here.
Fortunately, Sky don't ask me to have a Facebook page. Think that'd be a step too far for me.
