Apologies, not the clearest post.

Spotted the hole today, didn't see anything making it. From the spread of the stones my assumption is something dug down from the top, bit like a dog that flicks the spoil between it's legs when digging, rather than something like a mole that emerges from below - the distance the stones have been thrown seems too far for that.

Seems too big a hole for squirrels, mice, rats, moles? A slim badger that somehow managed to get in the back garden and couldn't find a way out?

I would say rat, but they are not usually such messy diggers and because the hole doesn't go anywhere, "40-50cm deep" I'm going to say it was a squirrel digging something up.

Clarks shoes that I paid £100 for down to £75 this week.

Feck black Friday.

I call, no way you paid £100 for a pair of fecking shoes. Was it a typo with the last zero and down to £7.50?  Grin Grin Grin

Now I am a cheapskate as everyone knows, but I do make an exception for Clarks shoes. I buy a Gortex pair about once every 3-4 years.

In return I get dry, warm, comfy feet in the winter and cool, comfy feet in the summer. all for around £30pa.

Google Clarks Un Tread Lo Gore-Tex.

I presume it's a lot easier to adjust output and burn an extra 500 KCal a day, than burn an extra 4000 KCal in a day, so I would presume spreading the cake out would be less harmful for your 'friend'

Hmmm....

See I would have thought the body could more easily process and store an extra 500 cals per day over 7 days than it could 4000 cals in one day.

Eaten in one day, I suspect that a goodly amount of the 4000 cals would pass through unused.

If your theory is right, then in a survival situation you would be better off eating all your food at once rather than rationing.

I have no idea of the facts, I'm just cogitating.

I suggest you your "Friend" puts the cake in a shed at the bottom of the garden to  1) stop others eating it.... 2) keep it cool   & 3) and most importantly .. means that the will have to walk a few hundred yards to get a piece and would of basically burnt of the calories when you get there meaning you deserve that 4th piece in 3 hours.

This is more good advice but not an answer to my friend's original question.

Basically, which will cause more weight gain, 500 extra calories per day for 7 days, or 4000 extra cals all at once?

Over an extended period of time the weight gain will be the same.   Calorie deficit daily/weekly/monthly is what causes weigh loss and calorie excess causes gain.   A short term one day excess of 4000 extra calories won't have any more damage a month later to your weight than eating the cake slowly over the period of a week providing all other calorie intake is the same in both situations.

Hmmm... Sounds far too sensible to be true. I advise everyone to eat all available cake immediately.

I'll have to check those out I need a new pair of everyday brown shoes.

Where are they £75 and is that only until tomorrow or is Black Friday now a week?

They should be available in all Clarks shops Ralph. I think the offer lasts until Monday.

You can buy them online but you can't beat trying them on and having a flounce around before you buy.

Do you remember when you could check how the shoes fit by looking through the X-ray machine?

I'm afraid not Ralph.

Shoe shops were where other people bought their shoes.

Mine usually came with the tats, (the rags we collected) or from the second hand boot & shoe stall on the Castle Market in Sheffield. It opened at 6am on a Saturday morning and all the good stuff was gone by 7am.

I assumed this must be some joke that went above my head, but wow.

Things that broke today.

Camper door handle snapped off in the frost.

I'm betting this won't be a fun repair.

Not a joke. There was a machine which you put your feet (and new shoes that you were trying on in the shop) in the bottom, and looked through a viewfinder in the top to see the X-ray of how snug the shoes fit. It was used mainly for children.

The image looked green and you could see the bones in your feet too.

I saw it earlier; as I said, I assumed it was some joke until I googled it.  I must have just missed them by a few years.  Still, I am sure I got plenty of asbestos and leaded petrol exposure to make up for missing out.

A couple of days ago someone accused me of living in the past. I've been pondering it since then and I've decided that they are probably right but...

Meh! l like it here.
