Yup, let's quit with the food talk. Red has this special "I put on weight when I'm dieting" diet.

Tonight I will be mostly playing the $30k on Laddies, and the Blue Sq super sat for the GukPT at Walsall.

I've had one tiny draw in the last 10 days, I'm hemorrhaging money, and it's causing me to twitch a bit.

At the moment, when I'm playing, I look like Herbert Lom in The Pink Panther.

When I look at the amount of junk we have around us these days, I can’t Adam and Eve it. Back when we were travelling proper, we had a bucket, a bowl, a churn, a bag of coke and a kettle-prop, and that was it. We could pack up and be on the road in 15 minutes. Now we have more tranklements than you can shake a stick at. As my old Granny used to say, “We’re in a worser state than Russia”.

Anyway, I wanted to tell you about Dave Thomas, the JCB man, remember? First though, I have to set the scene.

I had been looking for a bit of land to buy for several years. Stopping on the roadside was getting harder and harder, we needed somewhere that we could call our own.

One day while I was out working, I spotted this unkempt field with two old railway carriages, a van body, and a couple of scrap cars lying about in it. After much detective work, I managed to track down the owner.

Luck was on my side, He was quite keen to sell the field because he had just bought a house in Wales and he had the chance to buy some land to the rear of it. He had no further use for “my” field, and he needed to lay his hands on some money. I had, as they say, dropped on.

I bought the land for a price that both the vendor and myself agreed was reasonable. We didn’t bother with solicitors and all that old pony; we went to the land registry in Leicester and picked up a form. Then we both signed the appropriate bits, and it was all done and dusted that same day at a cost of about 15 quid.

All I had to do now was clear it up, put in an access track and some hard standing. Bring in a water and electricity supply. Move my caravans on to it without getting lynched, and then get permission to live there.

I didn’t care. I was prepared to give it my all. I had fallen totally in love with the place, and now it was mine. I was chuffed to little mint balls.

Nice post Red Smiley

Can I ask how you tracked down the owner?  Was he someone local or did you use some official office to find out who it was?  I'm just curious as I'd quite like to buy one of a few unused areas of land around us but am not really sure how I go about finding the owners.

I just went and asked the local farmers, they always know who owns the land in their area. The biggest difficulty is tracking the farmers themselves down. You roll up at a farm and knock on the farmhouse door, then you wait for 20 minutes while a neurotic collie tries to nip your ankle.

Eventually a plump woman opens the door and tells you that the farmer is in the top 20. This doesn't mean he has just made a hit record, it means he is somewhere in the 20 acres of land that are at the highest point in the county. There is no access, except on foot, and as you set off, the collie tears a long strip from the back of your trousers.
