I see you have a bike, surely cycling is a better way to lose a few excess stone  pounds than going on a diet?

Finish JCB man's story!...Dying to read that, I am.

I'm working my way round to him, I need to do a little more background first.

PS- I found the bike in a skip, it was all in bits. I used to do 30 mile round trips on it last year.

This is just magic stuff to read Tom.

Why is the "fixed" 'Van - the one you are selling, & does not look like it's made for towing round - called a "Mobile", & how do you refer to the mobile one (that's presumably not called Mobile.....) that can be towed around?

Is Mrs Red to blame for calling the fixed one the Mobile? It sounds like a woman-thing.

Although more relavant to the American market, this Wikipedia entry more or less explains it.

Thanks Tom. What would we do without wikipidea these days, even though it's not always factually correct? And the even better, & wholly free (by my definition, anyway...) google?

I hired one of those mini excavators (£75 per day and the most fun you can have with your clothes on) I attached a tiny 9in bucket and within 3 or four hours I had dug a 3ft deep trench all the way from my gate to the place where I intended to put my Caravan (about 100 yards).

All the while, passers by were asking me what I was doing. I didn’t want to tell barefaced lies, so I told a half-truth. I said that I was going to keep some horses here. I dare not tell the whole truth and say I was a Gypsy intending to camp here. I did that once with a piece of land that Derbyshire County Council had identified as a possible place for us to stay. As soon as I told the locals, over 800 of them staged a protest and Derby got cold feet. Luckily, I hadn’t yet bought the land, so I wasn’t out of pocket. I did learn a valuable lesson though, next time, I would move on first, and tell them about it after.

I went to my local plumber’s merchant, and I bought an enormous roll of MDPE 20mm blue water pipe. In spite of its gigantic size, it weighed very little and I could lift it easily on my own. Feeling like the Incredible Hulk, I lifted it above my head and threw it on to the back of my truck. I noticed an old lady watching me from her front garden, and resisted the urge to say “Don’t make me angry…..”

Next I went to see my mate Marion down at the scrap yard. In case you’re wondering, Marion is a bloke who’s real name is Anthony. He got the nickname Marion because he loves robbin’….

After a bit of searching, Marion and I managed to find a lovely roll of armoured cable. It was just perfect for my electricity supply. He only charged me scrap price for it, bless him, he saved me a small fortune.

Under cover of night, I managed to dig down and expose one end of the steel pipe that crossed the stream. I was relieved to see that it already had two other water pipes running through it, they looked like they had been there forever. I quickly exposed the opposite end too and slipped my pipe through alongside the others. 20 minutes later, backfilled and turf replaced, it was as if I had never been there at all.

I washed my hands in the brook and somewhere in the darkness, an owl hooted. “Whooo, whooo?” It seemed to ask plaintively. “It was me mate” I answered softly. “But I won’t tell if you don’t”
