ferret story damnnit! great read red-dog, so nice to see someone utterly immersed in the natural world. Also, btw, did you ever use string when ferreting or were you a bell and spade rabbiter?

Sorry, it's been a busy couple of days.

I was never really a fan of line ferrets Alex. I always had a spade, one of those nice folding ex-army trenching tools. (I still have it today)

Line ferrets were big hob ferrets that you attached a piece of string to before introducing him into a burrow. If he refused to come out from below ground, (Usually because he had cornered and killed a rabbit, then eaten his fill and settled down next to the carcass for a kip) you could haul his ass back to the surface using the cord, or you could follow the cord as you dug down to his position.

The thing I didn't like was when the ferret managed to tangle himself around the roots of a large tree. If that happened, you couldn't haul him out, and often you couldn't dig down to him either, so the poor animal is left to a slow lingering death.

So I used my ferrets without a line. If I had one "Lay up" below ground and I couldn't dig it out, I would put something tasty into the ferret bag or box and leave it near the hole overnight. Most of the time, the ferret would be in there, fast asleep by the next morning.

I was at DTD last night for the £100 freeze. The atmosphere was wonderful. I had one of those nights when you get moved a lot, so I got to share a table with bookiebasher, karabiner, tikay, reggie, slow mo, redbull and loads of others. it was a real fun night.

I managed to get to the last two tables before I went bust. Once I'm out of the competition I usually go straight home, but There was a couple of no cap £1/2 Texas games running and I was having such a good time..

I played the no cap game until they chucked me out. Despite having to pull up when I ran my house into a bigger house, I managed to escape only £26 down. Result.

While I was playing the cash, Simon Trumper came over for a quick word. "I bet that ferret comes to a sticky end" he said, and one or two of the other players at the table nodded knowingly.

It made me laugh. Sometimes, it's surprising to find out just who reads this tripe.

Next time, I'm gonna just say "Tom, get the kettle on, be there in 10". (But I bet I won't, it's just "not done" in my little world).

it's embarrassing to ask, & embarrassing to be told "no".

Just to try to make things clear, it shouldn't be embarrassing for you to ask precisely because I wouldn't be embarrassed to say no if it was inconvenient.

That's what you call a true friend.

PS  You explained it perfectly Tom and taught me something new.   Wink

Echoing others, Tom, well done on reaching 200 Pages - I've thoroughly enjoyed every single page. And learn't so much about nature, wildlife, human nature, & eating disorders.

I'm looking forward to the rest of this story. Apart from the inevitable sad ending that your pet stories always seem to have.  Sad

Well you guessed it Evil, there is a sad ending to the ferret story, but the concept of a  “sad ending” is subjective. If you think about it, most animals have a much shorter life span than we do, so in telling an animal story, it sort of follows that you have to finish by reporting it’s demise.

As I see it, all you can do for any animal in your charge is to ensure that it is well cared for (Both physically and mentally) and then, when the time comes, have the courage to do the decent thing by not allowing it to suffer a long illness or a painful death.

If it falls to you to make sure that your pet has a good death, it’s comforting to know that you also gave it a good life.

See. This is why I could never write a book. When I started this tale, I had no intention of telling you about this particular ferret. I wanted to tell you a little story involving my brother Tracy, my cousin Billy Smooth, A 4-10 shotgun, and a whole nother ferret altogether, but as soon as I began to type, I started thinking about “Thin Lizzie” and before I knew it, I was telling her story instead.

The story-telling meanderings are fascinating though Red - you just need to learn to do a 'Billy Connolly' and just when we think you've forgotten what you'd started to tell, bang, you're back on track.
