"tred"? Tred = mate/breed/copulate?

Oops,  typo. It should read "Tread"

JSTOR: Heb. mardut, Chastisement and Chastity
Assyr. redf, to unite sexually, means to tread - to copulate; cf. our the cock treads the hen.

This is a great point Byron, and exactly the one I plan to address in my next post on the subject.

is it legal?

No. It is now illegal, (and rightly so IMHO) I'll talk about that too.

When I first spotted them out our back yard, my father-in-law said we were lucky as they had become rare.  Apparently the Irish liked to catch them in the old days too, but they're on the rebound now and can be seen more regularly around the place.

Being a noob, and not having read all 250+ pages, I've been fascinated reading this stuff.  Even at my semi advanced age, I'm learning stuff I never knew I needed to know, and I'm loving every word of it.

I'm sure it must have been mentioned before, but there's a film in the making, here.  I watched Clunes and his puppies, and it was alright.  I've watched Jack Hargreaves, and only recently realised that I miss him.

I've always been as bad as the next ( ignorant ) man when it comes to 'gypos' and their lifestyle.

But it's never too late to learn.  And if I can, maybe there's hope for a few more bigots like me.

Obviously said lightheartedly, but DEFINATELY with serious undertones.  There's got to be  a place for your story with a wider audience.  FFS look at the listing on BBC3 etc, and tell me this isn't a) more interesting, and b) more educational.

We've got Bill Oddy and Kate Humble.  All you need is a bit of enthusiastic eye candy ( I know she's a lot more than that, but imo, Kate is definately eye candy as well ) like, maybe, Phillipa Forrester, and I'd sky+ it every week.

Red is a mixture of Ray Mears, Jack Hargreaves (who remembers him?), & Fred Dibnah. It'd make splendid TV.

Reading Red's memories reminded me of Jack on HOW, and OUT OF TOWN, from many, many moons ago.

Jack Hargreaves was a great hero of mine - a truly splendid gentleman, & I watched every single show of his agog with wonder at the stuff he chatted about. It was filmed in his garden shed I believe!
