Returning to Red's theme of how language evolves, where new words & expressions arise, I read an interesting piece in The Times, yesterday I think.
Two Regional Football Reporters on some BBC Local Radio Football phone-in were both sacked for using the term "window-lickers". I'd never heard the expression, though I suppose I can work out what it refers to.

Quick Quiz.
Where is this?
Bonus question, WTF is the ground doing halfway up the window?
Is it Luton?
Correct.
Now why is half of it below ground?
hm dunno - I thought there was a path there - walked past it the weekend of the blonde bash which is why i recognised it. Is that the old burger king that's now shut down, on the side of the arndale centre?

In Glasgow anyway, it refers to the 'mongol bus' taking unfortunate mongoloids/down syndrome kids to their day care etc.

In Glasgow anyway, it is a derogatory term referring to the bus that takes the kids with downs syndrome to their day care etc.

Which is just as offensive and out-dated term as window lickers.

It's what I grew up with. That's what people called the bus in sunny Castlemilk in my youth.

Just because people might still use offensive and out-dated terms doesn't make them any less offensive or out-dated.

then why use the term 'unfortunate mongaloids' in your post. Did you not realise it was offensive?

Mongaloids is the correct medical term for the condition.
edit :-
No longer so apparently :-
Mon·gol·oid or mon·gol·oid (mngg-loid, mn-)
adj.
Of or relating to Down syndrome. Not in technical use.
n.
A person affected with Down syndrome. No longer in technical use. Now considered offensive

How far we've come in such a short time.
The very British scandal of a titled lady and her gamekeeper
The public queue outside the Old Bailey to witness the Lady Chatterley trial in October 1960. Penguin was prosecuted for obscenity for publishing D. H. Lawrence?s sexually explicit novel Lady Chatterley?s Lover. The counsel for the prosecution, asked the jury if they would wish their wives or servants to read it, and so summed up the gulf between the old and new world. Penguin won. It was a turning point in British publishing and heralded the Sixties sexual revolution

Interesting timing - the Obscene Publications Act is about to get it's first outing in 27 years. Story
here
. The publication concerned is just slightly stronger in content than Lady Chatterley. Just a bit.
Random trivia - D H Lawrence went to Nottingham High School (the one next to the Arboretum) on one of the first publicly funded scholarships to a fee-paying school (in 1898).
