I'd have thought giant oak-leaf camoflage would only really work in giant oak woods.....

Unbelievably, the colour doesn't stop it from keeping you warm at the sea side.

I usually only see photos like that in newspapers accompanied by a caption saying "Police say the gun-collector was a loner who kept himself to himself"

That wasn't the most sensible thing to post Andrew, we know that Red's shot someone already....

In the days before I became a little more familiar with guns, a bloke I knew told me that if he put his duffle coat on and stood 40 yards away from me, I could shoot him in the back with my 4-10 and it wouldn’t hurt him. I was quite intrigued by the prospect of actually shooting someone, and of course didn’t for one moment consider the fact that he may have absolutely no idea what he was talking about.

We set about conducting the experiment. He put on his donkey jacket and diligently paced out 40 yards. I meanwhile loaded my 4-10. (I neglected to mention that my gun was a full choke model, and I also forgot to mention that I was not using the standard 2in cartridge, but rather the 2:3/4in “Forelong” cartridge, “With extra stopping power”

Looking back, it’s incredible to me that I would ever actually point a shotgun at someone that I didn’t intend to kill, let alone discharge it. Even more incredible was the fact that my victim was encouraging me to do it.

He stood with his back to me, lowered his head, flipped up the collar of the duffle coat and shouted that he was ready. I cocked the hammer, took careful aim, and pulled the trigger.

He went down like he had been poleaxed.

I just stood there, rendered helpless for a moment by the enormity of what I had done. A few seconds ticked by. Slowly, and with mounting terror, I started to function again. It was like waking from a bad dream only to find that it wasn’t a dream after all. Reality hit me like a slap in the face and my bowels turned to water.

I looked again at the prostrate form. There was absolutely no movement. He looked like a pile of old discarded rags. I didn’t know whether to run toward him, or run away.

The vast bulk of the Grosvenor "G" casino sits directly between the sea and our B&B, so I didn't feel the full effect of the storm until I stepped from it's lee and walked down on to the beach.

The wind was like a huge angry beast. Hurling itself against the land and howling as it hit the railings of the sea defences. It was so incredibly powerful that I struggled to make headway and keep my footing. The fat raindrops and spume that it carried with it peppered my face and body like a hail of bullets.

I walked a long way out towards the sea. Despite being wrapped up warm, I was cold and tired within minutes, frozen and exhausted within half an hour. I don't know if it was in defiance or exileration, but as the wind screamed, I screamed back at the top of my voice, the sound was whipped away and lost almost before it had left my lips.

Mother nature was giving me a tiny glimpse of her power and saying, "See how easy it would be to die out here? That's far enough. Go back"

Notice the lone seagull in the picture. they have almost no body fat, and have to rely on a tiny layer of feathers, perhaps 1/8th of an inch thick to protect them from the wind, rain and cold.

How do they survive?

By stamping up and down on the lawns of country houses it seems.
