Dont watch a lot of films, mainly because of a hatred of sitting in Cinemas with others. But I finally managed to get around to watching 'The Big Lebowski'. I have to say it was a most enjoyable film. Any recommendations for more slightly left field films like this?
Have you watched any of the other Coen brothers films? Fargo, Raising Arizona & O Brother...
O brother I've seen but not the other two. Sounds like a recommendation for them?
Yep, a must imo

Read Life of PI and loved it. Off to see the film in 3D this afternoon. I have a 3D TV but never seen a 3D at the flicks so looking forward to it.

Maybe the David Lynch films? Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive are both excellent.

Charlie Kaufman writes very good and slightly offbeat films
"Being John Malkovich", "Adaptation", and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
are all well worth it

1st Jan 2013 - movie thread updated from original post I did on the 1st July 2012. (Page 136 of thread) Now all in 1 post for use to view?!
Reminder of the notes i made at the time -
So to follow is EVERY rating that was in the format of X/10 for any film that was mentioned in the 153 (updated) pages previous to this post.
I'll start with the "odd" ratings, then 1/10 2/10 etc.
Some notes -
If a film was rated more than once I took the highest rating, and in brackets are any other rating that film recieved.
(Looked at avg but too complicated)
If a film was rated 7.8/10, I have put it in the "7/10 category and rated 7.8/10 higher than 7.3/10 which is higher than 7/10

Well 2 hrs 46 minutes of film to reach the end of Chapter 6 of the book
To quote one reviewer "Peter Jackson didn't want to direct it and I didn't want to watch it, its like we were locked together in a cinematic suicide pact"
Of course its visually stunning, and the CGI is wonderful and nothing beats Andy Serkis as Gollum (still the ebst thing in any of these Middle Earth films) but
the editing!! it could be an hour shorter. It plods and it meanders. Of course some of that is the more whimsical tone of the book
the interminable 13 dwarves walking across a landscape sequences...
the feeling that no one is ever too far away from a sound stage....
I mean there's two films to come!
******************************** MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ***********************************************************************
I saw it tonight and have bits and bobs to add. Honestly what the fuck were the fucking stone giants about tilts me to even think about. I don't give a shit if they were in the appendix or even the main book (99% they aren't) but it just came across as ridiculous and mega tilting. If you really need Thorin to save Bilbo just have him slip instead of that ridiculousness.
I hated how it was set out at the beginning, I really wanted the reader to meander along with some unknown, instead of being given the general idea of everything already. Seeing the dragon at the end is also mega tilting. Can we not enjoy some sort of suspense. Also, the eagles really tilt me in general. Gandalf and his powers get semi ridiculous in the mine too, I mean all of a sudden he can teleport and blast 83275348975 goblins away, but just chills most of the time hitting stuff with his sword. Radagast was kind of cool, not sure I like his actual character, would have rather had a noble young wizard who lives in the woods instead of a drugged up hippy but he was entertaining and its just a different interpretation. Didn't think the beginning was quite as slow as people said.

I couldnt agree more, I went to see it tonight and I was extremely disappointed. Stone Giants, Gandalf quivering on a tree but has the powers to destroy x amount of goblins, it was long and dragged out for as much as it could. A complete waste of 3 hours that I will never get back.

That must have taken ages Waz but it is interesting so thanks a lot. Kind of thing that makes Blonde such a cracking forum. Couple of stunners in there. No Country for Old Men 2/10??? really? I hated it but i would have given it more than that for cinematography alone. Similarly Slumdog 3/10!!!
Anyway I have watched a few over last few days so might prob worth rating them.
4321 - I like urban flicks more than the average guy but this was absolute garbage. 2/10
In Bruges - I really enjoyed this. It was LOL funny in parts but there was more to it too with good characters that you felt invested in and a really beautiful city as a backdrop. Made me want to visit Bruge too. 9/10
1 Day - not to be confused with the adaptation of the David Nicholls book which is alright if nothing like as good as the book. This is the Birmingham based hip-hopera and yeah it is as bad as it sounds. Not really sure why I watched it. I had just watched One day and I noticed it on my drive and wanted to be sure it wasnt the same movie and once i started watching I couldn't stop but in the way you have to look at accidents on the motorway when you pass them even though you know you might see something really horrible. Definitely close to the worst film I have ever seen. 0.01/10

1 Day really didn't work although it wasn't really for a mainstream audience; more an introspective.
Still better than the Hangover. The gap between those two films includes any number of diseases, granted.
And the Hangover was better than Superbad.
