If you guys don't beat us next week you're going down.

We are truly hopeless. Especially defensively.

Elliot partly to blame for the penalty, clearly hesitated off his line, so sigh. Obv just sheer stupidity from Colo, reckless and completely unnecessary, thought red was harsh as it wasn't completely clear who was getting there 1st between Fletcher and Elliot, pen and a yellow more than suffice.

They were that terrible I thought after an hour we could still win it.

Feel sorry for McLaren, ridic unlucky today, pressure will be on him now for sure.

Maybe even six points off us won't save them clowns this season.

I thought it was a harsh decision at the time and I was surprised that the Sky guys were unanimous in agreeing it was a penalty. Having said that, I didn't think it would be overturned as it could be argued either way. Galling for Newcastle though, they would have won that game without that decision.

if they didnt overturn this then they would have to give 10 penalties/red cards every game (corners etc) and they don't want the league to go in that direction.

was one of the worst refereeing performances I've seen. cattermole had so many horrible tackles and didn't get a yellow card, tiote got a yellow super quickly for a nothing challenge

Same.  Was it a foul?  Yes.  It was inside the box hence the pen and it stopped a clear goal scoring chance.  Therefore a red card.  Confused?

On what grounds was it over turned?  I assume the FA decided it wasn't a foul otherwise the over turn makes no sense.

"An Independent Regulatory Commission found that the match referee had made an obvious error in dismissing the Newcastle United defender for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity," said an FA statement

he was last man, and barged the attacker out of the way as the goalkeeper came out to gather

I do accept that at corners etc similar goes on and goes unpunished every week, but i thought this decision was correct so am too confused

I thought it was a penalty but there is a line of thought he wasn't denied a clearcut goalscoring opportunity because the goalkeeper would have been on to it. That was the BBC interpretation anyway.

I think this is it, although they could have clearer. It's a penalty but it wasn't a red as it wasn't a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Got to feel for the ref with their wording, ".....the match referee had made an obvious error....."
Throw him under the bus, why don't you? Remove the word, "obvious", as it isn't that clear cut either way, even with the benefit of numerous slow mo replays.

Ref deserves throwing under the bus. Awful performance.

Fail to see how it was a penalty in the first place but even having given it the red card was a ridiculous decision.

How Sunderland, and Cattermole in particular, got through that with no yellow cards god only knows.

I heard somewhere from next season if a player is given a red for a professional foul, he won't get a ban.
