Sorry if this has already been posted. I just heard the the Gala poker tour will not go ahead this year. The official line is....   A Commercial Decision because of the recession. I think its very sad news, it was a good tour with affordable buyins, just seems very strange that after 2 years of building the tour, they pull the plug stating a poor reason. Gala and poker might be parting ways

Source?

Also, I don't think 'A Commercial Decision because of the recession' is a poor reason. They mean 'it's costing us money' which is a good reason to can it.

So why not just admit "because it's costing us money"

I guess it's easier to blame the recession rather than the fact that they have been running a tour that loses money that they have no choice but to can.

That's what all companies do - none of them say 'we're cutting back because of stuff we did which was wrong' - they'll blame external forces and the recession is a great scapegoat. It's obviously not the actual reason.

I'm sorry to see the Gala Tour go as well. Despite the fact that it probably leaves the GUKPT in a stronger position, the competition from Gala was welcomed, as it was good for the whole UK poker community. We used to bill the GUKPT as 'The UK's biggest poker tour.'  'The UK's only poker tour' doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Yep, just about every gambling business thats gone under in the last 12 months have blamed the credit crunch, I dont buy it from any of them.

This is a real shame, the GCBPT really filled a gap and I think it would have been a good season 3 for them. You only have to look at some of the attendances for GUKPT side events to know that there would be no problem selling these events out (which they always did I believe). I also think there was very little visibility of online satelittes for these events. The good news is it might get a few more fish in the GUKPT events and I really hope some big company come in and spot the gap in the market for a £500ish national tour.

There goes another potential blonde sponsor it seems

low buy ins, different player base, but definitely a tour!

big gap in the middle though now

Absolutely. The UK's only poker tours (plural) are associated with BSQ and they deserve huge plaudits for that.

this means that evil mr raabs plan for world domination is a step closer as he now runs the only tour (apart from apat which he also has his eyes on).

how long before he has his little finger in his mouth and is offering a prize of " one million dollars" for an event in London.
