I'm with Pads on the basic points he is making.

People who aren't successful, and who get bitterly jealous about those that are, almost always don't do anywhere near enough to achieve that success (but think that they do).
There are people who are always going to be successful, eventually, no matter how much bad luck they have along the way.

Absolutely not. History is scribed by the people who aren't good enough, or committed enough, to make it.

I realise I'm probably being levelled here but I obviously didn't mean literally the people that write it.

If the people who are a success define what it takes to be a success then there is going to be something of a bias in that. The ones who aren't a success? Well who cares what they think. Just jealous.

I know you didn't mean it literally - but I did think you may have been a journo at some point. Smiley

So your born in North Korea or with a brain defect you just need to get out and work a bit harder and you'll be right?

You can be pretty succesful in life, whilst still accepting there is a lot of luck along the way and without getting jealous.

Likewise you can be the best in the business, but your business just doesn't work out.  Types of employment can just disappear, suppliers and customers can fail leaving you in a bad position that isn't of your making.  You can be incredibly talented at something like chess but get none of the riches of someone who is incredibly talented at poker.  And people can always just get hit by one of life's shitty sticks just as they are about to reap the benefit of their hard work.

Of course luck is a factor, but the guy in North Korea isn't the one complaining about it, it's more usually someone with no motivation in Liverpool.

You mean historians like Winston Churchill and Julius Caesar?

It's getting tedious now. And I'm filled with bitterness and jealousy Wink

Seriously Patrick, I am over the moon for you and the run you are currently on.

Despite my opinions on the role of luck in gambling, I do agree that to a great extent we make our own luck. And that hard work, commitment and dedication are majorly important for achieving success.

You are a very, very impressive guy and you are also very inspiring. It is a pleasure and a privilege to know you and to have seen you develop into the player that you now are.

It's weird that despite my belief that there is so much luck involved in gambling, I am strangely certain that you are going to continue your rise and achieve your goal of being the BITB. I truly hope so anyway. And one thing is for sure - all your current and future success is, and will be, very well-deserved.

Much respect. Stu x

Nicely said. And seconded on the congrats. Really good to see hard work rewarded in such spectacular fashion.

In poker, as in life, it's quite possible to be a success just by being lucky. It's very difficult, arguably impossible in poker, to do it on hard work alone. I suspect you are much more the latter than the former.

But you can see their cards right?

Great tekkers. Teach me pls. If you ever develop one of your obsessive compulsions to become a scratch golfer then i will happily swap you hour for hour lessons so you can get me to at least semi-competent at poker.

Wish I'd offered you a prop bet against making SuperNova Elite at the start of the year (I almost did, just because you were working more at the time).

Now would happily bet that you reach #1 in the P5 world rankings at least once this year.
