Hannahs parents want me to teach them to play poker this weekend. They are total beginners so I'm starting from scratch.

What would you lead with?

Hand rankings?
How a hand plays out?
What betting/raising/checking/calling is?
Which hands to play/avoid?
Anything else?

How do you explain why there is a small blind and big blind? (I've always struggled with a succinct sentence to correctly explain this in the past).

I think I'll just over complicate things and will overload them with info and just generally worried that ill be shit!

In before a whole realm of tap-ins.

start with hand rankings

then advise how it plays out (assuming holdem) - briefly mention betting rounds

blinds and button descritpion (blinds are to start betting that all)

then play some hands face up - keep this very simple

(i would teach them limit holdem first, then progress to no limit)

Why limit guy?

That's another thing. How do you explain why you don't bet 5x pot or 1/8x pot that sort of thing?!

How do you explain in a nutshell to a beginner, why do we usually bet 50-70% of the pot?!

I would say that the sb and bb are there so that there is money/chips in the pot before the cards are dealt meaning there is something to win.

that is why to teach them betting, start with limit, its one less thing to think about, its not a chouce per se, they can bet a fixed amount, or check.

WE forget how difficult it is to rememeber and comprehend everything.

Move in to no limit at the end of the night. Bet sizing means nothing to beginners

Id start with how to take advantage of polarised ranges, before moving on to the benefits of straddling vs weak opponents.

Get them ready for the harsh reality of the grind imo.

Oh and remember a good player does not necessarily make a good coach/teacher!

Why don't you teach them Mtch? Get them ready for the harsh reality of flopping a set twice per orbit.

Also, Alex, as primary school as this sounds, bring up a hand ranking chart and a top-down view of the table with the button and blinds on your iPad or something as a reference.

Stick with tournament play. Cash is too complicated.

Hand rankings.

Betting rounds, flop, turn and river.

Hands to play as a beginner, A10+, broadways & pairs.

Hands to avoid like the plague.

Positional play. Why A7o is bad utg but amazing on the button.

When to stop calling and just get it in or fold.

Teaching limit would be totally pointless. Why teach something that they'll never use?

Just tell them to raise everything 3x pre antes and 2.5x after. Make all bets down the streets approx pot sized to avoid giving any obvious tells and to keep it easy to work out.

They dont have enough time to work on this in one evening.

Ive spent hours on my own dealing myself a pocket pair then dealing flop after flop on the floor in my bedroom. You cant just develop this skill over night kid.

Would be funnier if this wasn't true.

David if there was a lot of interest in such a video I'd be up for doing something like that and would probably quite enjoy it. No idea what the level of demand would be though?

Would need to be done for us fish though, gotta use terminology like backraising and all that kinda shit we understand. Don't start talking about balancing ranges or any of that other bollocks we don't understand  Cheesy

I've taught a few total noobs, ranging from friends, to grandparents, to young kids. By far the easiest thing is to play several hands face up - don't spend too long trying to explain things, they'll just get very bored. As with any other beginner, they will play weak/loose/passive once you start playing for real. Be gentle while explaining why it's a bad idea to call a pot sized bet on the river with 9 high. Especially when they've just beaten your triple-barrelled airball bluff with 8 high.

I taught an ex missus once.. Bought two bags of skittles and divided them up as betting tokens. She got it aipf vs my  with the monster  Two Diamonds. obv flops a boat and i don't get there then gives me days of rubs telling me how she is better than me. I google her now and then as i am a massive stalker to see if she has any flags. obv her reasoning was diamonds are a girl's best friend. The slag.
