A senior swim at the leisure centre used to cost £2, now it costs £2.05. What possible difference can 5p make? Let's suppose an average of 100 senor citizens use the pool each week, (it's definitely less than that) surely that can't be worth the long queues and bad feeling while they try to find change.

You've only been a senior five minutes and you're already causing trouble.

Just playing devil's advocate here because I get your point but what's the alternative method of putting prices up? If they wait a few years then make it £2.50 there would probably be geriatric riots because of the unjustifiable 25% increase. At least this way they can slowly put prices up in line with inflation and nobody (apart from you of course) can complain. Counting out 95 pence in change 100 times a week is undoubtedly going to be a pain though. It's 4 entire coins!!

Why don't you collect some 5p's from your change from other products and use them when you go swimming or just pay contactless? I have you down as a coin hoarder Tom with a bells bottle full of change right?

You're right of course, I could easily stash some of the 5ps and make sure I have one with me when I go. What I'm likely to do though is purposely have only £2 in change and they will then have to change a £20 note for the 5p. Then Mrs Red, who often accompanies me, will pay separately in the the same way. Either that or I will leave a big bowl of 'help yourself' 5ps on the counter for fellow seniors to dip in to. I never pay for anything by card. l just hate the electronic trail idea, people knowing where I was and what I bought etc. If they want to know they are welcome to ask me.

Making it deliberately awkward paying with the £20 then complaining bout the queues and bad feelings. Sounds like a proper old person mate.

I am much much younger than you obviously but have an identical view on paying for every day things. Everything is paid for in cash (it also helps avoid having to bank cash winnings in the day job into the bank to then spend on the card) because i hate the idea of anyone knowing what i get up to in any part of my life and my spending habits. I have a huge pot of coins though which easily avoids your problem. Really is a first world problem. To the point where my local paper shop quite often get really pissed off with me buying the racing post or sunday times in a combo of 5p/10p/20p pieces! You should try it. Try paying for the swim in 41 5p coins and if you do it enough they might put the price back down to £2! Where we differ is that anyone who doesn't know me personally can't ask me where i have been and where i have spent my money because its none of their f******* business. If you want to know where i am then you need to know me personally. You are too generous offering to tell them if they simply ask.
