The Design work needs more love imo, watercolourSunset and zeroTech my favs att. Although i am sure i have seen something very similiar to 'checkmate' before, can't quite put my finger on it..

Couple of questions if i can.
Do you start your pieces on a blank canvass or is it more canabalised work?
How long have you been doing this type of stuff?

I use PS CS5 occasionally for my work but nothing anywhere near on this scale. What would you suggest a PS wannabe such as myself do to get on the right track?

Thank you Milligan. Smiley

Always blank canvas. 2000x1600 with 72dpi and transparent background to be precise. 300dpi for printwork.

I used to play around with Photoshop 7 on my parents' computer back when I was 17 or something. I used to go out for a few bowls and come back with red eyes and click some buttons until I found something that looked pretty trippy. Inadvertently, this made me very familiar with various filter techniques on Photoshop. I think I better method, looking back, would probably just have been to find some tutorials online... But if you're talking about time actually spent properly learning and making "art" then probably in the region of two years.

As for "getting on the right track," though I still consider myself a bit of a beginner myself as I get deeper into the world of design, I'd recommend reading a few basic tutorials to familiarise yourself with all your tools. This includes spending a week tearing your hair out trying to figure out the pen tool, as frustrating as it is, it's invaluable. Also, just use some nice fonts and textures; you don't have to actually say anything as long as it looks good. Hope that wasn't too condescending, I'm not used to people asking me for stuff. Smiley

Do you have any of your work uploaded anywhere?

[ Project 25 update. ]

Finished this piece shortly after I posted the last update, because I couldn't be bothered to get out of bed and draw this out and didn't want to forget it! Maybe it had just been a trying day, because I don't love it nearly as much as I did when I finished it last night. Nevermind, though, half of the point of this project was to see what I'm capable of hashing out within a tight time confinement. I'll just post a polished version on my blog when it launches in Spring 2012. Cool

Cheers for the reply mate.

As part of my job I design online surveys, normally we self brand with our standerdised logos and fonts etc, but sometimes clients want me to incorporate their own branding or want one knocked up from scratch in which case I duplicate something that has been done previously by someone else or as a last resort I make my own border/banner and leave the body plain. I wouldn't embarrass myself by posting anything I had ever made in this thread, plus most of the time the clients pay to retain copyright pirvaledges, so couldn't anyway.

From some of the things I have seen posted on Blonde there are a few people around who are a dab hand with the pen and lasso tools themselves.

Gonna give a couple of the tutorials on Lynda.com a go and maybe I could have a piece ready for the new year. I imagine it will be Eons behind the majority of your work, but will give it a go and then upload.

Thanks again.

Ps. what was your inspiration for checkmate? i know i have seen something similiar before!

Hope something good comes from either your posts or your designs. GLGL.

[ Project 25 update. ]

Slacking a little bit. Here's yesterday's piece. Possibly one of my favourites so far. Love how clean and simple something looks after a couple of hours tidying up a complete mess of type and brush work. Working on today's piece as we speak. Going to be looking back on December 2010 later as well, I hope. Should be a good laugh. Smiley

Haha. Thank you sir. Don't think I could actually take money as I'm clearly using an image from somewhere else. Could redo the image in high res and send it to you to get printed if you want though?

Not exactly how I wanted it to turn out, but I like the shape it started to take. Was a little short on creativity today, but nevertheless here it is.

Might have a trip report or something soon.

Nothing much to say as far as a trip report goes. Was a massive nit all night and definitely missed two value bet spots. Chalking it up to being gunshy. Finished the night winning £20. It's not much, but it's better than losing £500! For the most part of the night there was some good banter. Table was good, just seemed to have some bad timing with my big hands; nobody ever had anything. Let's see if this is the start of the upswing. Get some confidence back and rake in the odd big one like old times. Would like to see 2011 off in at least decent spirits, ready to crush the next 366.
