I think if you do enough research, everything is both good and bad for you. Case in point today, I went to my personal training session on an empty stomach as I always do with a morning workout. I have been told by numerous people who work in fitness/nutrition that this is a great thing, because you work off stored fat and there is no blood in your stomach digesting food, and thus more in your muscles for the workout. My trainer told me the opposite, and that I should eat something to increase my blood sugar which makes for a better workout (Sugary drink could be the happy medium, anyone?).

Probably the most important thing is to forget about the minute details and stick to the core things that are proven across a variety of expert opinions/diets ie. exercise more, less calories, more fruit & veg, plenty of protein, don't take nutritional advice from Girgy etc etc (only joking champ)

I'll replace health trainer with the word idiot, just cos I want to.

Tell him Wimbledon are looking for an Idiot this year to advise all the players on nutrition.

Maybe Federer can regain his crown if he just lowers that intake to one banana. He'll have a big edge on all the other competitors.

Well that's kinda obv. If you were planning on eating 5 bananas per day that's a bit silly.

If you are needing to lose that last stubborn half a stone, you might need to look into exact portions and counts.

But for all of us with 5st+ to shift, work your way thru the list.  Anyone that can identify the good v bad can lose weight.

1. Fresh fruit
2. Doner kebab
3. lean meat, grilled
4. Mars bar, deep fried
5. Chips from the chippy
6. Chips from KFC
7. Steamed vegetables
8. 1 lb of extra mature cheddar
9. Pint of lager
10. doorstep toast with butter
11. Mixed salad with lo-cal dressing (no croutons, cheese etc)
12. Grilled/steamed fish
13. Hot dog.

So far my days have looked like this:

Brekky - Porridge, Banana, some blueberries
Mid morning snack - banana or nothing
Lunch - beans on toast or scrambled eggs on toast or scambled eggs w/out toast
Midday snack - banana or a muller rice
Dinner - will always vary, so far its been in Jan: chicken & brown rice, spag bol (wholemeal pasta), fish mash n veg, chicken potatoes n veg, chicken fajitas tonight (Other typical evening meals for us include jacket potatoes, pizza, thai green curry with brown rice, sausage & mash, and usually a meal out once a week)
Desert - muller rice, or small choclaty treat (like a mini moose pot thing)
Late snack - porridge with blueberries (small amount, 130 cals-ish) or crackers with humous.

I start the day, first thing literally, by necking a half litre of water. This is something I started doing after discovering a great time management/productivity course about 8 weeks ago. This is a great start to the day and it usually results in me drinking tons of water the rest of the day.

The only major difference is that the lunch is my ONLY serving of bread (previously toast would be my midday snack and evening snack) and it is smaller sized bread than before. Everything else is pretty much as I would normally have it (and once or twice a week  I would cave in and pig out on biscuits - usually sparked by a bread binge).

So basically my entire thing is reducing bread, my trigger food, and favouring better snacks. FYI - there is not a thing in the list above that I didn't love and eat already. I'm not even calorie counting, because I don't see that as sustainable (plus I actually have a reasonable unconscious idea in my head that the above is ok - alongside exercise 4+ times a week and lots of dog walks).

As for the gym. Funnily enough, despite the weight issues, I have always been quite fit. But because of my diet, it has always been a damage reduction thing. The last year I have learned boxing with a personal trainer, and now he has got me on a (brutal) programme which includes a load of circuits that work all the muscles - I wont  share them here because I have no idea what they are called - most involve medicine balls, kettle bells, and these vipr tube thingies - but you can ask FUN4FRASER who has been doing them with me that they are quite intense. Speaking of which, first PT session of the year this morning and nearly threw up - I presume thats a good thing, feel great now.

Last thing to say - Porridge seems a great food for this. It is very filling, is lovely with a some blueberries in, and I presume the carbs are slow release?

I can vouch for Mr Shoelace...intense indeed  Smiley

I was there from 9.45 till midday today, Im assuming you were in early with the kung fu kid putting you through your paces ?

I can sneek a session in tomorrow if you like...?  either 9am or 2pm (before deepstack )

Ahhh, a woman. That explains it.

Eating a coupla bananas a day is fine. You get different nutrients and vitamins etc from different fruits so only beneficial to eat different ones rather than all the same. Some fruits have a high sugar content though.
