Matt

No test as such beyond the usual bloods, blood pressure etc but I was referred to an Addiction therapist. I turned up for the first class not really knowing what to expect, and turned out it was a group of fatties all with the same type of problems

Its very odd really I am a bright bloke, I know what the problem is, I know how to in principal solve it, but there's a missing link to actually doing it .

Once that trigger hits, that's it. Or was, its better than it was. For a while If I wanted carbs and I could not have them (ie not in the house) the only solution was to lie down/curl up. I felt ill, and there would be a huge endorphin rush if I went to the shop and bought a loaf of bread. Followed by a huge low once I had eaten some of it. So the physical manifestation of this all was a pain to live with.

I think this is always going to be one of your biggest problems Rich. There's nothing I or anyone else can tell you that you don't already know.

Because you're an intelligent person it's going to be difficult to persuade you that sometimes other people know best. I'm pretty intelligent myself and I know how hard it is for someone to convince me I'm wrong about something even if they're far more qualified in the subject than I am. I'm not saying that I know best by the way. Everything I say is simply my opinion and it's not backed up by any science. It works for me though so it might work for others.

I have to admit to being unconvinced by people of the 'addiction therapist' ilk. I wonder how often they tell people they aren't addicted to something? They'd soon be out of a job if they did.

In the most sensitive way I possibly know how to be I think you just have cravings. You want it so you have it. You ain't gonna die if you don't have that slice of bread but you've decided you want one so you go ahead and do it. As I said before there's no problem with that if you can accept the consequences. You're a grown man so I'm not about to say 'just don't do it'. You know what it's doing to you but hey if you want it mate then you go for it in my opinion.

I can't help but think that all this addiction therapist has done has given you an excuse to eat more carbs. I think it actually makes it more difficult for you because he's taken away your choice. You can no longer choose not to eat carbs because now you're actually addicted to them rather than just wanting them.

I think one of the worse things you can do is restrict your carbs by removing them from your house. Allow yourself a loaf of bread but keep it in the freezer. That way it's there but if you need it you have to wait 20 minutes for it to thaw out.

If you really want some carbs you're just going to the shop anyway and then you're binging.

By taking them out of your house and saying you're addicted you're taking away your right to choose what to do. This must be very difficult for an intelligent person to deal with. Give yourself the choice back would be my first bit of advice and then go ahead and accept the consequences of the choices you make of your own freewill.

If you want a slice of bread take it out of the freezer and go for a walk round the block while you wait for it to thaw out. You'll get an endorphin rush from the bit of exercise then another one when you get your reward when you get home and eat that slice or 2 of bread.

Don't feel guilty about eating carbs. Just make the choice to have to do a bit of work for them. I might be wrong but I think it would be a great place to start.

It was my choice to go "cold turkey", which actually the person I see advised against. however I was (unusually for me, really) stubborn

In hindsight he (and you) are more right than I am!

Personally I hate the 'cold turkey' form of dieting. Can't think of anything worse.

You really need to start in a small way Rich. By trying to take huge leaps you're never going to get there.

I'm not going to say anything else on this subject with regard to yourself Rich unless you specifically ask me to. I can throw my opinions around all day but if they aren't wanted then I'm wasting my time and also your time in reading them.

Let me know if you want a bit of help mate and it's there. Your choice Wink

Work to do now. Back later. Looking forward to this Rich. Could be fun.

First thing to do if you're man enough.......

Write down everything you eat and drink today on this thread and also the times you eat them.

That means everything! Need to know the lot!

Better still, (If you'll pardon my intrusion) Write down what you ate yesterday because knowing you will record it influences what you eat.

Better still......if you can get your head in the right place, the sausage rolls, bread, carbs, whatever, will not bother you.

I adore "Snickers" bars & crisps. So, when I am dieting, I carry a Snickers Bar & a bag of crisps around with me, on the car seat, in the house, next to me on the sofa, everywhere. And I just look at them, & say "f**k you, I will NOT yield, so you can bugger off" sorta thing.

The whole dieting thing is not physical at all, it is between the ears. These little psychological tricks are what makes it work, or for me, anyway.

Well here goes

Yesterday was a non-routine sort of day as I was in and out of hospital/school runs/dog walking while kids mum is ill

Didn't eat anything til about 3pm. Not good, should eat breakfast

3pm was far too ravenous, hospital vending machine two chicken salad sandwiches and a powerade

7pm at home Chicken (two grilled breasts) and vegetables. This was what I had in before my plans were thrown up in the air before the weekend

11pm. Hungry again. Far too many biscuits with a cup of tea

About 3am. Hungry again.Woke up. Rest of biscuits

Well,at least its honest!

today will be more indicative of standard habits
