Bottled/tap water is fine for health reasons.  Makes no difference which you choose.  There are numerous articles on the benefits of water.  You should give it a go for a couple of weeks and see if you notice a difference.  I have never drunk tea/coffee in my life so i am used to just drinking water/fruit juice mainly on a day to day basis but since the diet commenced i have just reduced it to water only around 5/6 litres a day (with the occasional beer to keep things balanced at the weekend!).  I would imagine someone like yourself might notice a relative big difference as your water intake seems relatively low and your body may have adjusted to this over time.

5 LITRES A DAY?

That's like a gallon, right?

Are you serious?

I'd be up all night.

Yes deadly serious.  I have a 2 litre water bottle which i sip from all day at home whilst i work and refill it twice a day.  A lot of people think it's odd but ever since my serious training days when you are forced to consume large amounts of water i have always kept up this volume.  I assume it's not bad for me.  The only problem i see is that it means when i go out boozing i have the ability to consume large volumes of beer because of my practice with water on a daily basis.  If for whatever reason i am out of the house doing stuff during the day and find it hard to consume water i do feel sluggish and can feel the difference.

See, there's the thing, I DO feel sluggish & lethargic, so thats why I'm looking at this water lark.

Having said that, I could just never manage 5 litres a day of anything, never mind water.

You could try stopping smoking, or moving on to one of those lectric fags. I bet that would liven you up more than drinking 5 gallons of water.

How do you know I still smoke?

I may have packed up smoking before I went to Vegas.

How do you know I wrote that? I may have been abducted by aliens and replaced by a handsome impostor.

Is that your way of withdrawing the comment, & apologising?

It was a disgracefully presumptous comment.

I feel I should clear up one or two misconceptions and give you a bunch of reasons to drink more water. Smiley

First of all, let's talk about smoking. Obviously you know the reasons this is bad for you and well done on stopping. It's been brought up in this thread that not smoking will mean you put on more weight. I'm sure this was said with tongue in cheek, however it's good to be sure that by stopping smoking will not directly cause you to put on weight.

  • Nicotine itself is an appetite suppressant, this should be pretty self-explanatory - this is the reason a lot of people put on weight when they stop smoking, because all of a sudden they're receiving messages from their brain again that they're hungry.
  • Another reason people eat when they don't smoke is oral fixation (the habit of putting something to your lips several times a day.) The big problem with this is that there are normally trigger points for when people light up a cigarette: something has brought on stress, you're on your dinner break at work, etc. Now you don't have a cigarette to put to your lips so most people reach for something else, and that is more often than not food.
  • Here's a pretty important one, and this ties in quite nicely with water consumption. Your body is smart and knows what it wants, however most people (myself included) are complete idiots when it comes to decoding your body's messages. Most people when they're thirsty, will realise they want something, but then head to the fridge instead of the tap! This is made even worse when you're just coming off the cigarettes, because not only do you head to the fridge when you want water, but you also head to the fridge when you want a smoke! What a caloric disaster!

What's also worth pointing out is that, in this thread it was mentioned that you should shoot for 5 litres of water a day. This does seem a little excessive in my opinion, but it might not be in someone else's opinion. I'd like to ask a marathon runner (if only we knew any...) if he thinks that 5 litres is an excessive amount of water to drink on a hot day over a 26 mile run. What's crucial to remember is that, if you're most people then you are not drinking enough water per day! Basically drink water until your piss is a clear colour. Yes, for a while you will be hitting the bathroom every 30 minutes, but you will get used to it. Have you ever watered a parched plant and watched all the water just run through the soil? What are you doing you daft plant? I've saturated you! Don't you know that you're thirsty?!

Okay, so that's great and all, but... why exactly should I be drinking more water?

  • It helps to maintain the balance of body fluids. Your body is around two thirds water, and utilises water for various functions such as saliva secretion, temperature maintenance, digestion, nutrient transportation, and blood circulation.
  • We touched on this before, but a lot of the time when you think you're hungry, you're actually thirsty. So while this isn't an immediate physiological benefit of drinking water, if you drink water when you're thirsty instead of eating food when you're thirsty, you'll find it easier to lose weight - which is what this thread is ultimately about!
  • Electrolytes, baby. When muscle cells don't receive adequate fluid, they shrivel! This means they won't perform as well which a) makes physical tasks more arduous, and b) you will feel more sluggish overall.
  • Water keeps your skin looking good. Don't get me wrong, if you were a competitive bodybuilder preparing for a show, you would want to remain relatively dehydrated to keep your skin paper thin and give the illusion of larger muscles. However, if you're everyone else, the rest of the time, then you want to hide those wrinkles, blemishes and wobbly bits by maintaining a good level of hydration.
  • Just to expand a little on bodily functions: water helps with, um... evacuation? The risk of kidney stones, cystitis and constipation can be reduced by staying hydrated. Overall kidney and bowel health is also a great reason to ditch the diet sodas and cordials.

Five great reasons right there. There's no secret to drinking more water either, it's not you have to avoid any potential pitfalls like you do when it comes to dieting or exercising. Just drink up. Get a couple of glasses down you before you start your day, and have a glass or two with every meal. Hope this helps.

That is a great explanation, thank you.

I do now, however, feel rather bad.

When I said I may have quit smoking, I was talking, you know, technically. And I was pretty sure that nobody (except Tom) would buy it.

Apologies.

Been reading Lyle McDonald books for the past few days and did not believe this when I read it but it turns out it's true.

Without googling, a 450lb man walks into a hospital in 1965 and says I'm gonna stop eating for a while in order to lose some weight, you can monitor me if you want. They say yes and he consumes only water and vitamins for how many days?

Other cool fact is that once an obese man gets up to about 400lbs he will have maxed out his genetic potential at building muscle, so underneath all that flab is a totally ripped non steroid using body builder, if you think about it every time he gets up off the sofa or the toilet or walks up the stairs he's doing it with a wobbly 200lb+ strapped to his body, and that weight has built up progressively. Be so cool if there was a way to get the fat off without losing the muscle, liposuction and surgery to remove a little bit of skin perhaps?

I'd be interested in the answer to this - I would expect it to be a very long time - 240 days ?

I'm not at home so I'm postponing my weigh in until tomorrow or Wednesday. I've been a good boy for the most part, my only blips have been Sunday lunch with my sister Susie, and a complimentary bacon sandwich at DTD, both of which I was too polite to refuse.

Cobblers!

That's like watching a bloke set himself if fire and then deriding others for saying "Phew! It's warm today".
