Marco Silva sacked!

Every Saints fans head just snapped up.

What went wrong?

Crikey, who saw that coming?

I'd have thought Watford were over-achieving, though the wheels have come off a bit recently.

Chasm between Silva and owners since Everton approach.  Writing has been on the wall since December.  Dreadful form.  Dreadful performances.  Board refused to sanction any signings and likely hoped he walked so have given up on that strategy and tinned him.  Shambles all round.

Just this week the owners invited some family guests over to watch the players train, because of the weather Marco was asked to use Pitch number 1 which is overlooked by the restaruant and a heated balcony, he refused to, and went to pitch 5 which is as far away as you can possibly get, from that moment I knew he was gone.

Those who watched the early NFL game last night will have seen a familiar sight, as the Patriots fell behind but the opponent's overcautious, conservative decision-making let them back in.

In Holland, the biggest annual chess tournament, Wijk aan Zee, is going on. Playing the biggest tournament of his career is debutant, Britain's Gawain Jones.

Yesterday, he played Magnus Carlsen, the world champion with thr black pieces, which is as close to playing in Foxborough as it gets in chess.

Jones got a good position in the opening, but it was still brutally level. Carlsen then played a move that sent shock waves around the (chess) world. He missed a trick so simple pretty much any amateur would be annoyed to miss it.

Anand and Giri look on astonished.

The result of this move was that he lost a bishop, which, at this level, is usually enough to resign. Jones would have been 1/20 in running to win from there.

No one expected Jones would get so big a lead so easily.

Least of all Jones.

Jones didn't seem to know what to do next. He spent 50 minutes over his next 3 moves and chose defensive, passive moves, trying not to lose, rather than trying to win.

A dozen moves later and he was losing. Fellow competitor and former world number 3, Anish Giri, observed:

The World Champion @MagnusCarlsen is now officially a full piece stronger than the rest of the mankind! #stillgotit #TataSteelChess

By way of comparison, a host of US sports stars commented on Tom Brady's never-say-die attitude:

Jacksonville did the natural thing, just like Jones. But when you have your chance to beat a great, you have to take it; step on the throat and deliver the coup de grâce.

How often do we see it, when the underdog panics when ahead?

That's a great piece from Harry Kane man, & a really terrific photo which says so much.

Only one word of response from me.

Belichick.

And history is made as the man who smiles less than Jack Dee actually shows emotion.
