You were in Hawaii at a ball game?

I was there on holiday.

I had never flown, as I was petrified of flying, so I just went into a bucket shop one day & booked a flight to Honolulu, Oahu.

I stayed in an hotel overlooking Waikiki Beach, and a bunch of HUGE blokes checked in one day. I was intrigued, why so many well-built giants all of a sudden?

It turned out they were in town for the "Hula Bowl" or somesuch. College Football, I think.

I had to go watch, & I did.

The Stadium blew me away, better than anything I had ever seen in Europe, almost to this day (it was in around 1982 I think), & was configured for both MLB & American Football, it was called "Aloha Stadium".

What a great picture and story that is, how long did you stay there for and what prompted the sudden trip?

One of the reason I love NFL so much is I am totally unbiased and can watch the games totally impartially.

It means I appreciate a good play whoever makes it, except when my opponent has him in their Fantasy team and I'm totally ambivalent to who I bet on.

Obviously I hate the Seahawks though.

We were totally inactive yesterday, no bets placed or completed.

Three days before the month end, & our first anniversary, & 5 days before our biggest ever bet completes, everything has gone a little quiet. The lull before the storm, oooohhhhhh.

Our forward book of bets continues to have some decent equity, & we have some value here & there.

In DoI, Samia Ghadie, 16/1 a few days ago, is now generally 6/1.

We got Evens (thanks to Doobs, & a press by Tighty) on Ravens to score longest field goal in Superbowl, this is now a big favourite at 4/6.

In the 6 Nations, we are on Tuiligi to be Top Try Scorer @ 16/1, but he is injured & will miss the first game, so has drifted to 20/1.

Why Honolulu of all places? 

No logical reason, except that I wanted to break my flying "duck" in style, it was Xmas & I wanted somewhere warm, or hot. It seemed to boil down to South Africa, Caribbean, or Hawaii, & I chose the latter.

When I booked it, I never even knew that "Hawaii" was not a single island, or that Honolulu was a different island altogether.

I flew PanAm, via San Francisco, & even now, I can barely believe that Hawaii, an American State, is five hours flying time from the West Coast of America.

I went for 2 weeks on the first occasion, & the next year I returned for 3 weeks.

The extraordinary thing about Honolulu is that it is like any other major metropolis, skyscrapers, office blocks, traffic jams, multi-national Corporations with offices there, it could be London, New York, Sydney. And yet it is 5 hours by air, & God knows how long by boat, from Mainland America. Think of the logistics of transporting all the raw materials all that way, all the cars, building materials, & domestic appliances, da de da. Incredible.

Pearl Harbor was a must see, as was Edwards Air Force Base, & the Pacific War Cemetery.

Honolulu is quite small, you can drive round it in a morning.

One side of the island, the south, where Waikiki is, is sheltered from the weather, & has no wind, & glorious but packed beaches. The other side is the complete opposite, with the biggest surf anywhere on earth (or nearly so....), & if you stand on a surfing beach, the sight, & more so the sound, of pounding waves is one of the most awesome things I have ever seen.

The name of that area, where the surfers from around the world congregate, is strangely connected to Fred.

The pulchritudinous Mrs David Mitchell Victoria Coren had/has a fear of flying and even went so far as to get therapy for the issue. Sadly, her therapist was killed shortly afterwards, in a plane crash. I believe that qualifies as ironic.

I think I should point out that the guy surfing in that photo is not me.

Whilst I was standing & admiring the waves, from the safety of the beach, my hire car, parked some 200 yards away, was broken into, & my hotel room key stolen.

I drove back to the Hotel as fast as I dare, but not fast enough, as my room had been ransacked, & my money, passport, everything, stolen. So, I had to extend my stay. Not a bad bad beat really.
