A brief aside.

One of the fun things on this thread (for me) is learning more about different sports, & in reading the write-up of the Rockies win, this rather worried me.....

Tulowitzki appeared a little gimpy as he returned to the dugout after running out an infield groundout in the bottom of the sixth.

I'm not sure I've heard the expression "gimpy" before, only "gimp", & surely we are not taking masks here, are we? I know the Baseball Wicketkeeper bloke does wear a sort of gimpy mask thing.

So I google imaged "gimpy Baseball".  This was the result.

Help yourself, presumably, get stuck in.

What's coming up?

Plenty.

No good looking back & bemoaning a bad run. Our Bankroll is solid, we are betting well within our 'roll, we remain profitable overall despite a bad month, & we have a ton of fun sweats lined up. If a losing run got me down, in the way some poker players give it the "I hate poker" line after a bad session, I'd snap quit, I'm not a masochist & I don't pursue hobbies I don't enjoy. It's all good.

Our cricket bets continue today. We are in a big hole with both of them, facing a total £100 loss on the 2 games, but you never know, that's the beauty of it.

A new golfing sweat begins today, or rather, 4 of them.

We have Steve Stricker in "The Memorial" at 30/1, EW, 6 places paid. Covered on Sky Sports for 4 nights, a decent start today & we will be up & running.

In the Welsh Open, we have three x 72 hole match bets. If it goes to plan, we'll need to order in some Right Guard.

We want the overweight, disinterested, Coetzee to lose 72 hole Match Bets with.....

Manassero

Siem

Noren

The nut result would be for Coetzee to miss the cut, & the others to remain in, but that'd be no fun, so let's hope that runs all weekend.

We invested quite a bit yesterday in Euro12 stuff, but we wll summarise trhat nearer the time, as our Euro12 BetBasket grows.

Confidence & morale are high.

The Oaks, the "Fillies Derby", is tomorrow.

We are on "Vow" @ 10/1, she is currently 5/1 best.

The Oaks, more correctly "Epsom Oaks" I believe, is actually older than the Derby, by exactly one year, having been first run in 1779. The first winner was owned by the Earl of Derby, & a year later, The Derby itself, named after Lord Derby, was introduced.

There is actually a connection between the Stanley Cup, the momentous Ice Hockey Championship, & the Earls of Derby, but I won't bore you with the details.

Moving on several generations, the 16th Earl of Derby employed a trainer called George Lambton, who was a well bred & educated toff, a son of Lord Durham.

George loved betting, & whilst under age, he borrowed against his Trust Fund from Joe Lewis, the notorious London moneylender. Lambton lost most of it, & was disowned by his family, but went on to become a fine jockey, & later a tremendously successful trainer for the 16th Earl (later Lord) Derby, & then his son, the 17th Earl of Derby.

He trained 9 or 10 Classic Winners, including two Derby winners, & two Epsom Oaks winners, & he was the Trainer of the legendary racehorse Hyperion, who went on to become the most influential sire in the world.  Even the great Northern Dancer traces back directly to Hyperion.

I can recall all that (probably incorrectly) from memory, with no help from, google, but I can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday. Senility rules.

I recall it because the first book I ever read on the Turf was called "Men & Horses I have Known" by George Lambton, & I still re-visit it every few years, few books read so beautifully.

He was a hopelessly addicted gambler, & even back in the 1920's he was regularly punting £10,000 a time, which was monster money back then. Settlement day with his bookies (it was all done on credit back then) was Monday, hence he was a regular visitor to Joe Lewis every Monday morning.

You should try reading the book, it's an amazing read.

I'll shut up now.

i am not sure having roach out and narine in is that much of a negative

roach out is massive, narine is a twenty twenty beast but like doobs says has very little first class experience . A class act no doubt but i dont see him doing a pakistan on england.

englands record against spin at home is pretty good tbf

More pertinent, perhaps, is that the England selectors are considering resting their front-line bowlers.

We shall see.

We are where we need to be, 2-0 up, so it's all gone to plan so far, & Tighty might yet escape a thread veto. If he's lucky.

A bit of a Banzai here.

Power Rock is 150/1 on betfair for the Derby.

He was 3rd in the Ballysax and 2nd in the Derrinstown.

He is probably in as a pacemaker, but looks likely to stay 12 furlongs.  In a weak Derby, with an odds on jolly, then I just have a feeling.  Given Camelot's speed, there is always a reasonable chance he won't stay.

He was clearly pacemaking for Wrote in the Derrinstown, but him and the first pull 7 lengths clear (the first isn't in the Derby).  Wrote went on to finish 4 lengths off the leader in a weak looking Irish 2000.  But Wrote may have killed his chance by going too quick.

His overall form isn't nearly good enough, but there seems a small chance that he is genuinely improving.  He is only 66s with the bookies to deter the each way thieves, so full on proper banzai win only it is.

Anyway the Derrinstown is here.

http://www.racingpost.com/horses/horse_home.sd?horse_id=793671#topHorseTabs=horse_stories&bottomHorseTabs=horse_entries

Don't go crazy, I have only put £15 on myself.

I have a niggling worry about this bet.  Since last night there has been a couple of periods where the horse has shortened, but then it has been pushed right out again.

I think there must be a decent chance that we are backing a non runner.  I expect it will still be a big price when we lose the ante post risk (presumably tomorrow).

So I think we should now hold off until tomorrow.  I can't be bothered laying off for £15.

Its shortened because of me I think Doobs   Smiley

Bet Status: The following bets were successfully matched Current Odds bets   Order by Matched Date

Tower Rock  140  £32.90  £4,573.10
Ref: Bet matched:

 160  £2.10  £333.90
Ref: Bet matched:

With Camelot being a late arriving horse the pacemaker may just have a chance to hold on

It isn't the shortening that is worrying me. It is the fact someone has probably laid five figures since last night and keeps happily pushing it out again.  He may well believe the horse is shite, but he may well know the horse is not running.  I am not close enough to Ballydoyle to know the answer, so figured it was probably better to wait a day and back at 130.

Of course I hope I am wrong on this and the horse runs

Ho hum...
So the horses get laid all day and they then announce this.

O'Brien could run just two in Saturday's Derby
By Tony O'Hehir 7:51PM 30 MAY 2012 AIDAN O'BRIEN raised the possibility on Wednesday night of only having two runners in Saturday's Investec Derby which could lead the joint-smallest field for more than 100 years.

Ryan Moore will ride Astrology when the Dee Stakes winner will join stablemate Camelot, the odds on favourite, in the line-up for the Classic.

Speaking on Wednesday night O'Brien said: "Camelot and Astrology will represent us in the Derby. Joseph [O'Brien] rides Camelot and Ryan [Moore] will be on Astrology. Decisions about the other three colts we have in the race - Imperial Monarch, Father Of Science and Tower Rock - will be made in the morning.

"There is a possibility that Imperial Monarch might go to Chantilly for the Prix du Jockey Club on Sunday instead while we are having further blood tests done on Father Of Science and Tower Walk. We will make all those decisions before declaration time in the morning."

Astrology made all to win the Dee Stakes at Chester by 11 lengths while Imperial Monarch, winner of his only start last year, landed the bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on his reappearance last month.

If O'Brien takes three runners out and the others all stand their ground at Thursday's final declaration stage a field of nine, the same as in 1907, will go to post.

FWIW Kissed did the big drift yesterday before they announced she would only run in the Oaks with ease in the ground.

I need to promise myself that I will learn from this.

Well maybe all of us can.

Fortunately, I was slow out of the box, & then you wisely cautioned against us getting on until your spidey senses had sussed the situation. Sadly, young Fraser trapped too fast, & lost a few bob. Ugh.

I'm a bit of a William Haggas fanboy. I believe he has saddled exactly two Epsom Classic runners, one in the Derby, one in The Oaks. Both won. Three in a row would be rather pleasing.

AOB took 3 out this morning, so I have done my £15.  I will do a post this evening on a new thread, as I think it could be a useful discussion. The spidey senses were going early on this one and will explain why but at work now.  Cheers and sorry Fraser.

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't been following this thread for the last week or so.

Have we got a Derby bet yet?

I think Astrology is huge each way value at 10/1. 1/4 1,2,3 Ladbrokes.

No, we do not have anything for the Derby.

Looks like we might have now.

Doobsy put a rag up, but it got withdrawn. Story to follow.

We have "Vow" in tomorrow's Oaks though. We are hopeful.
