Great news for the friends, but surely Rory would have taken well care of his dad by now. Wasn't the wording 'by' age 25?

That was the way Maureen said it on the BBC. You'd think last year was the final chance. "Win it by the age of 25" would mean before 25 to me.
You have to wonder about how incompetent the firm who laid this bet were.
Apparently they told his dad £100 was all they were happy laying after he asked for £400 so he told his mates to try and get on and they got the £400 between them.
Given that this is not an event that could ever be on the system...guessing he was 12 years old or less at the time...they would have had to call up and enquire about a price. Presumably there is normally just one person in charge of those kind of things making the decisions on laying those bets. Surely three consecutive people calling and asking for a price on a young kid to win The Open by the age of 25 and getting 500/1 and then getting £100 on would ring some bells.
Surely the guy who told him £100 is enough was also the same guy who authorised three individual extra requests for £100 at 500/1.
Fishy or just incompetent?
Lose their job?

Confirmed on Twitter - by Andrew Cotter who apparently asked Rory outright - that this year counts.
Bit of an odd question to ask someone on the eve of round 4 of a major, even with the lead he has. 'So you're gonna win this then. Are your dad's mates going to get palped?'

I heard that he did get the sack, but after some re-training, he went on to be a Clerk of the Course.

Or should that be the Clerk of a Course?

I am sure a man who earns £20m a year can cover a £20k palp for his old man and his pals.

Surely they'd set a date with the bet, rather than risking age issues later on?
"Must win The Open by 1 August 2014" or whatever.
Not like they'd have checked his birth certificate before they layed the £100 £400.

One small thing that makes me think they have a chance of getting paid is that the bet was placed when Rory was fifteen, which suggests to me that the duration of the bet would have been set at ten years.
But on the other hand it's badcrooks...

My guess would be due to the publicity no chance of them not paying. I mean they do not mind doing long suffering punters on the quiet, but they will not want negative press like this. Worth more for the PR than they are paying out surely?

Spurs (minus the world cup stars, yes and Paulinho) are in Seattle tonight for a game against the Sounders. Just seen this analytical gem for those unfamiliar with the London soccerball team: Click to see full-size image. |
Is it true Morgan Scheiderlin is now following spurs on Twitter?

I'm sure the pot with all the 'I bet my nipper will do x' is pretty full, so they won't mind pulling a few quid off the top...
Like OTB said, it's worth a bundle in publicity, and Williams will love droning on about it to any media outlets that will listen!
