On the F1, where I follow closely and have a connection or two

Don't mind the Rosberg bet. The one lap pace of the Mercedes is very strong, and he's better value at the price than his major competitor Hamilton

On Schumacher I regard the price as thinn-ish. Why? Well the major uncertainty is the potential tyre degradation on the Mercedes at the 40c temperatures in Bahrain, a problem that didn't exist in Shanghai where it was cooler.

To my mind Button is a clear favourite to win the race..he seems to have a real edge in managing his tyres in tough conditions. He might only qualify 4th-5th as his weakness is the very thing that gives him a race edge..he struggles to get the tyres up quickly to do a very fast one off lap....

Will Schumacher/Mercedes be able to keep pace with the McLaren's in these temperatures? That's what a Schumacher podium bet relies on

Mercedes dont need to keep pace though! Schumacher just has to be faster than his team mate and the Red Bulls. The Red Bull isnt a slouch during the race.

Its a podium bet. He has to outpace one of three cars (two Mclarens and his teammate) to finish 3rd for us to win

He hasn't shown any sign of out-qualifying Nico, yet, let alone out-pacing him consistently in a the race (going back 20 races)

Then there are the Red Bulls

I hope the bet wins, but 9/4 isn't value.

I have to admit that I have no (worthwhile) knowledge of Formula1.
Is the rule that each car is only allowed a certain number of engines per season still in place?
If so, is Schumacher's "fresher" engine an advantage or are engines so reliable these days that it is irrelevant?

8 engines a season

grid penalties for new gearboxes too

(the aim is to reduce a season's costs for the teams down the grid)

Reliability is so immense now that any benefit is very marginal. Schumacher the only retirement last race, an extreme example of a trend to fewer and fewer retirements over the past 5 years

I'd be surprised if they changed the engine or gearbox in Schumacher's car- they only stopped it because they hadn't screwed a wheel on right.

Yes, that was my point.
However, I didn't realise that each car could have as many as 8 engines per season so, presumably, there's very little chance of teams trying to eke a bit more life out of a tired engine.

A few teams nearly ran out in 2010.

The key facts you need to know about engines in F1 are that they are rev-limited (to 15k RPM perhaps- I forget the figure). In the past you could do what you liked, and as such they revved the nuts off them, and that's what made them go bang.

If you own a F1 team, you can buy your engines off one of 4 companies- Ferarri, Mercedes, Renault, and Cosworth. The rules say that that each manufacturer must make their engine available to more than 1 team, and the engines must be the same spec. So it's the same engine in the McLaren, the works Mercedes and Force India.

The Mercedes engine is the best, then the Renault and Ferarri are a little bit worse, and the Cosworth is terrible.

Having the best engine is the most use on circuits that need a lot of power (obviously) and need a high top speed. Last year the Red Bulls had a really hopeless top speed (due to their ropy Renault engine) but it didn't matter since they could go round the corners much faster. This year they can't.

Coming onto your bets for Rosburg and Schumacher- the Mercedes car has two advantages 1) the best engine (see above) and 2) the best DRS (which is most useful in qualifying). These suit tracks with a big straight, like China. Bahrain has some quite long straights, but it's not as well suited. They are more likely to qualify well and go backwards during the race.

Yo, ready to make a contribution to this thread and it's one from the left field cos I didn't want to put up one of my sports bets. My better half is a big big fan of reality talent shows and the deal is I play poker while she watches whatever the latest talent show is. Safe to say I have watched a lot of auditions and know the formula for success in these. So sure, in my spare time I am Simon Cowell.

The current show of interest is BBC's The Voice. The secret to winning a singing contest in 2012 is freshness, creativity, and originality. A lot of contestants turn up and sing a good karaoke version of a song but that simply isn't enough these days. Many singers have a good voice but very few have that x factor if you'll pardon the pun. But there is a dude I watched on The Voice called Vince Kidd who rocked up and blew Madonna's Like a Virgin out the box. Literally the best first audition I have ever witnessed based on the above criteria for stardom. Every judge turned around because every judge wanted him on their team. I've been waiting for the first round to end so I could assess all the contestants and the market. I am literally amazed to find the price quoted is a huge 16/1 with Betfred and Totesport (compared with 9/1 on paddypower).

The overwhelming favourite for the show is Jazz Ellington at 9/2. Ellington obv has a beautiful voice but his image isn't anywhere near as strong as Kidd's and his performance didn't smack of creativity. Also the dude is black and unfortunately when it gets to round 3 and the public start voting minority groups don't generally fare so well. I mean Jessica Sanchez was voted bottom singer in American Idol last week causing outrage even though she is head and shoulders the best talent. There are exceptions but generally white males fare best in public voting. Vince Kidd is going to be mentored by Jessie J who will be the most popular judge and they will make for a formidable team. I also know he is well represented on social networking sites which is important for votes.

Round 2 is where the mentor chooses two of their singers to battle it out and then picks a favourite to go through. When you consider out of her 10 strong team Jessie J only gave two standing ovations and one was for Vince Kidd it's very unlikely she will vote him out in the next round. Thus by tomorrow night his price will be shorter and we will have valuuuueeeeee. I have lumped on this crazy bet today and if it doesn't win I hope to bring as many Blondes down with me as possible. A decent sweat for sure thou.

You caught me pre-siesta & post M1 traffic jam, so I'm on the case, though I suspect I may have missed the price. BRB.

It's not ridic. Backing a leather-trousered bleached-haired ghey looking guy who sang Madonna's Like a virgin for big bucks is normal.

I like pineapple, just wouldn't put it in a curry.
