I'm loving Jessica too at 7/2, so many good points made - whist I think the stamp thing may be a throw away comment - think it sort of sums up mood. She is so popular across all the voters and truly has mass appeal while the cycling vote will be split, don't care what anyone says. It's funny that we are having a discussion where our greatest ever Olympian is 14/1 and not even mentioned....it will be a very interesting betting proposition

Definitely wasn't a throwaway comment!

Perfect illustration of how popular she is.

I saw a vote on the most popular olympic moment a couple of days ago http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/news/ennis-heptathlon-gold-fans-favourite-moment-games-121017174.html.   Ennis (33%)> Murray (21%) > Farah (16%) > Wiggins (8%) > Hoy (2%).  I can't vouch for the reliability of the poll, but I won't be rushing to close my Wiggins lay just yet.  I managed to lay some of that 1.19 last week for a very lopsided book, though I must have been feeling a bit battered at the time as I didn't lay it nearly enough.

It strikes me that there must be a logic fail somewhere if the thread has closed the Ennis to win bet, but left open the Wiggins to lose.  It feels you should red out the latter if you chose to green out the former.  To be clear I am not suggesting that we do close it , just that leaving it open is illogical, captain.

Chris Hoy for life time achievement award.

or beckham
Oh yeah forgot he deserved some thanks from the whole nation for the utter lack of respect he was shown for being picked for the initial squad but then missed the cut. Two horse race then but think Hoy shades it. Beckham will get it after he hangs his boots up IMO

WTF @ closing out on Ennis? When and why did that happen?

I've got a huge position against Wiggins.

And I'm going down to Ladbrokes to press by backing Ennis tomorrow at 7/2.

She couldn't be arsed to run the 100M hurdles - that's got to count against her.

I hope you are joking!

She would be exhausted after the heptathlon! Only a sadist would expect her to compete in a another event after the exertion.

Daily Report, as @ 08.45, Sunday August 5th

Very quiet day on the betting front, more a day for watching than betting.

We placed a £9 Football Banzai which "got cleared off the line", so that was a close run thing. No cigar though. I think the occasional fun fiver or tenner does no harm.

We also had £5 @ 18/1 on the Swansea City Manager to be the first Premiership Manager to leave his post this coming season, no sooner had we placed it then a Post suggested it was a bad bet. Whoops, goodbye £5.

On the very day of her greatest triumph, we dedided to do some tidying up & LAID Jessica Ennis in SPOTY, £65 @ 5.2. Note we had BACKED Miss Ennis to win SPOTY, £62.50 @ 5/1 in May.

In the Mens 100 metres, we have Gatlin @ 25/1 for a tenner, he qualified yesterday for today's Semi-Finals.

In the Basketball, we are on Brazil for a Medal, & they crushed China yesterday, so we are in good shape, & our Basketball Corry, one J Cake, says he is happy with progress.

We have an interest in the Medals Table too, we need 3rd or better, that is looking better by the day, we are in 3rd place & some way clear of 4th & 5th at present.

In the Boxing, we have Tom Stalker @ 6/1, & he won yesterday, though not convincingly, we gather.

We might yet do nicely out of the Olympics, as we have a few other bets in good shape, too.

In golf, we have small interests (£10 each) in Hunter & Mahan in the Bridgestone Invitational.

They began Day Three 17 & 21 shots behind the leader, & finished the day 16 & 20 shots behind. Progress, then, & if it continued for another 3 weeks, we would have a chance.

There would have been lots of people in the stadium hoping to see the GB record holder run in her heat.
There was a rest day between the end of the heptathlon and the heats of the 100M hurdles.
She wouldn't have needed to be at her best to qualify.

Just sayin'.

Worst trade out ever?

Impossible she could trade bigger (unless she got busted for drugs).

The chances of that being remembered by more than a handful of voters in December?

If anything, I reckon that not taking part at all is better for her SPOTY chances than making the final and coming 7th.

Obviously a medal would have been huge though.

Racing Post do their Football preview pullout this coming Wednesday. Absolute must-buy imo.

Be interested to see if they do any goalscorer handicaps. Looking to get on Tyrone Barnett in some way. Guy is absolutely the best we have ever had at London Road.

Re: Jess in SPOTY. She can now be laid at around the price at which we got on and will prob go a bit shorter when she wins it tonight. I recommend getting out. Great bet but unfortunately Wiggsy has done for us. Don't mind though, Wiggsy is a legend - so cool it hurts. And he looks just like the guy I use for decorating.

There you go Keith.

I open with the renowned but fiendishly difficult Chompy orthodox opening gambit, P-Q4.

We can all agree to blame Chompy.

My locks for the list are

Wiggins
Ennis
Farah
Murray
Ainslie
Hoy

Probably on

Grainger
Pendleton
Adams

Last spot

Brownlee

When I was looking at the womens bet in the first place I thought that there being fewer viable female candidates would mean that the votes would be concentrated more on the athletes that did well. However there have been so many strong female athletic performances that I think this hinders the bet.

Daily Report as @ 0900, Friday August 10th

We talked a lot yesterday - the thread gained 12 pages, 5 of them after midnight! - but we did not actually do much.

We tried to eat some value on an Olympics Ladies Boxing Match, but we ended up on a value diet that cost £40. Cracking fight, & a lovely result, so no complaints.

We placed two small bets on the US PGA, a Major which has a strangely muted feel about it, almost a Minor Major.

With the leaders at -6, we are on Matt Kuchar @ 36/1, & Carbrero-Bella at a whopping 449/1. Both players carded level par, so are neither threatening, or out of it, 6 shots over 3 days is of no import. The course played easy yesterday morning, but the wind got up & things got a little tougher later in the day. The weather may have a huge effect on this one.

One aged bet matured yesterday, Tyrur Big Mike in the Irish Greyhound Derby, unforch we finished plum last & so £15 went south. Hardly a disaster.

I think I missed a few Bets yesterday. Winners, obv.

Here's Nicola Adams & her now famous smile. Never was Fred happier to lose £40.

Cabrera-Bello actually carded 71(-1) after a bogey at his last hole.

Badblokes still have Jess @ 7-2, so not much below the price at which you foolishly laid her back. This could be a back to lay to back to keep maybe?

Great news for the thread lay of Deana in Big Bro though, she's on the drift and could even get voted out tonight. Wp us.
