Small qualifier:

In terms of what she says, I would suggest Brittany Kaiser would not be considered a good witness.

The Sun has a surprising but no doubt carefully judged racist campaign on the go. Classic dog whistle stuff:

Slightly strange way to go after Sterling played well for England, so they had to look elsewhere.

and following on from that

Tories (Cummings) flooding Facebook with Boris Johnson ads. Likely testing messages ahead of a planned general election campaign.

obv leave campaign 2016 had a huge success with social and new media compared to stuffy old remain

https://www.channel4.com/news/could-online-adverts-promoting-boris-johnson-be-a-sign-that-a-general-election-will-be-called

New Netflix documentary The Great Hack shows how data mining and targeted advertising won the Leave vote and then went on to win the Trump campaign. Trump’s team were spending £1m per day on Facebook with tailor made messages hitting the emotional preferences of every American voter.

Anybody who thinks lying and advertising have no place in modern politics will be left in the dark ages. Afraid it’s all about manipulation now.

Thanks for the heads up on ‘The Great Hack’.

The interest in and seeming glee (forgive me if I’m wrong about the glee) about Cambridge Analytica is interesting. As always you don’t seem to think that lying (in this instance on the greatest scale mankind has seen yet) is a problem.

Have you watched it?

1: Are you aware that most of the propaganda directly aligns with your views?
2: It seems clear the Russian’s have been paying to manipulate people to a similar world view to your own. Does this cause you concern?
2: Are you immune to the influence of the propaganda? It would be impressive if you are. Maybe you already thought the way you do?

Good article in the FT on it this morning, Gillian Tett in the magazine.

Barnier might keep half an eye the Trump talking utter bullshit 10,769 times since he took office situation.

It’s gold for sure, another one to keep Seth Myers busy. The geography lesson at the end 😂. He was probably given a steer for the, at first look silly sounding, ‘England’ thing.

Kudos for not clicking, I wouldn’t myself under normal circumstances but these headlines keep getting forced on us, so decided to have a look.

They are running a series of front page splashes on alleged minor behavioural oddities of Meghan Markle. Very carefully dog whistling the ‘that’s not racist brigade’. It’s amazing how the passionate the ‘that’s not racist’ brigade are.

Barnier gambling the livelihoods of so many with your ‘liar liar bums on fire’ theory sounds about right

When negotiating with Boris he might keep his fingers crossed.

Hope Boris is smart enough to say ‘crosses don’t count’ before agreeing anything.

Don't suppose you can provide the forum with any details of the areas where this increased trade is coming from and the obstacles that will be removed?

You could also explain how this trade deal gets approved by the US Congress as their leader has stated that an Irish border means no deal.

In the context of your newly found admiration for Cambridge Analytica.....It’s like you’re a fanboy and are having a little go at imitating them. How is it Barnier who is taking the gamble? I would appreciate it if you could try and work out how you’ve actually come to think that.

" Incoming Johnson administration being warned that 'no deal' means passing legislation to bring 'direct rule' back to Northern Ireland.

This will be politically utterly toxic - and put UK and Irish govt on collision path "

Meh, not worth the paper it’s printed on. As one of my father’s friends used to say “I wouldn’t wrap my chips in it”

this was a fun leak yesterday

JRM  issues new style guide to his staff demanding male MPs are called Esq, the use of imperial measurements and which words are banned (but not 'not fit for purpose')

https://www.itv.com/news/2019-07-26/itv-news-exclusive-jacob-rees-mogg-issues-style-guide-to-staff/

of his "banned words" it was later revealed that RM had used them himself in speeches and articles 2,291 times

The LSE does produce some good stuff

needs a quiet room and concentration but its good

"Brexit is like a political Ponzi scheme. It was a political movement that promised impossible returns: a swift, painless, problem-free departure from the EU."

https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/brexit/2019/07/24/long-read-there-is-a-powerfully-rationality-behind-the-desire-for-a-no-deal-brexit/

it tries to explain

here is the first paragraph

"There is a paradox. Why, as the evidence that a no-deal exit will do serious and lasting damage to the United Kingdom has become stronger, do the advocates of Brexit increasingly assert that a “clean break” no-deal departure is the only way forward, and the only real way to deliver on the 2016 referendum result? The answer is that this is a logical consequence of the political psychology of Brexit,"
