What’s the difference between ‘disagree’ and ‘strongly disagree’?

I guess you would need to have a stern face or be extra grumpy to show that the disagreement you’re expressing is of the strong variety

Back to that difference between tens of millions spent on health tourism and billions. I think the wizards are saying that people will disagree with spending tens of millions but spending billions ramps up the disagreement to strong.

Think the level after that is extra strong disagreement. But that would be very serious.

So, should there be any limit to the lying? Maybe set the limit to what people can be persuaded to believe?

Unless somebody can tell me different, I’ll ignore explaining why the given numbers (health tourism) were so ridiculous and assume I’m just being trolled.

this is an advancement on our strategies talk yesterday

"Johnson's strategy now is "the best way to avoid an election is to show that you would win one""

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9595497/boris-johnson-brexit-strategy-opinion/

a very very good read indeed

this was a fun leak yesterday

JRM  issues new style guide to his staff demanding male MPs are called Esq, the use of imperial measurements and which words are banned (but not 'not fit for purpose')

https://www.itv.com/news/2019-07-26/itv-news-exclusive-jacob-rees-mogg-issues-style-guide-to-staff/

of his "banned words" it was later revealed that RM had used them himself in speeches and articles 2,291 times

Donald Tusk "don't waste this time!" comes to mind

97 days to no deal

One of my Uni lecturers had a list of banned words. I kicked off big time, too much in hindsight (young and foolish). In terms of JRM’s list, I also don’t like ‘very’ (I might have another go at stopping using it) but strongly disagree with banning words.

Made me chuckle, but I have had a few....

I’m glad it made you laugh. I hope you enjoyed the drinks!

In that spot it’s just very standard English. Seems like using the word ‘snowflake’ doesn’t really happen any more. I guess people realised that using it is just like writing ‘Im a thic cuunt’ on their own foreheads.

and following on from that

Tories (Cummings) flooding Facebook with Boris Johnson ads. Likely testing messages ahead of a planned general election campaign.

obv leave campaign 2016 had a huge success with social and new media compared to stuffy old remain

https://www.channel4.com/news/could-online-adverts-promoting-boris-johnson-be-a-sign-that-a-general-election-will-be-called

New Netflix documentary The Great Hack shows how data mining and targeted advertising won the Leave vote and then went on to win the Trump campaign. Trump’s team were spending £1m per day on Facebook with tailor made messages hitting the emotional preferences of every American voter.

Anybody who thinks lying and advertising have no place in modern politics will be left in the dark ages. Afraid it’s all about manipulation now.

Thanks for the heads up on ‘The Great Hack’.

The interest in and seeming glee (forgive me if I’m wrong about the glee) about Cambridge Analytica is interesting. As always you don’t seem to think that lying (in this instance on the greatest scale mankind has seen yet) is a problem.

Have you watched it?

1: Are you aware that most of the propaganda directly aligns with your views?
2: It seems clear the Russian’s have been paying to manipulate people to a similar world view to your own. Does this cause you concern?
2: Are you immune to the influence of the propaganda? It would be impressive if you are. Maybe you already thought the way you do?

It would be good if you had time for these questions. You perfectly represent the archetypal Cambridge Analytica wet dream. Insta loves austerity, insta loves Boris’s spending plans, Donald to the rescue, yay!

It's interesting the Cambridge Analytica stuff. I thought that documentary was really turgid for a notionally interesting story and nothing revelatory it seemed to me.

I'm sure I had a lot of my biases and prejudices confirmed/strengthened during the referendum (even if I don't remember ever clicking on any thick racist ct, click here links, perhaps it's the gardening stuff and corduroy trousers I buy online) Inevitable I guess given how well targeted a lot of the propaganda was.

I enjoyed it and it filled some gaps in my knowledge of the overall Cambridge Analytica story. I suspect I put more weight on the power of this stuff than you do.

Clearly you don't fall in the "persuadable" category  Wink If you missed the ads here are a few  Vote Leave examples:

Just a  mix of anti-immigration tied in with a simple lie Smiley

Dominic Cummings thought the strategy was great though. He has confirmed Vote Leave dropped 1.5 billion ads to a target of 7 million voters in the last few days before the referendum.

On top of that you had  Farage and the Leave.EU ad campaign as well.

I can’t recall having seen any mention of Turkey joining the EU during the referendum campaign.

I’m not saying they didn’t happen, just that I don’t think I saw any.

All these ads do is play on people’s genuine concerns.

Freedom of movement is a fact and it worries voters

Turkey does want to join the EU and whether that happens in the future is uncertain. So really just remove the “is” and ask “Turkey joining the EU. Good idea?” What’s the problem with that?

Remain might get hot under the collar about this playing on concerns strategy and the factual accuracy but let’s rewind to Project Fear. That was the exact strategy and it was full of inaccurate guesswork.
