Q of the day

Saw some stuff in the news today about trying to reduce the voting age to 16. I actually think it makes more sense to increase the age to 25 (Or later). You know nothing about life at age 18, I find it horrifying that 18 year old me was able to have any influence on the way the country is ran.

What should the voting age be?

Corbyn might find that things don't go so smoothly in future, now that he is reaching the end of his honeymoon period.

I find it horrifying that people over 70 have such a big influence on the way the country is run.

They've lived their lives, yet continually vote for self interest rather than attempting to improve things for the future.

It's the other way around isn't it?

Old people bother to go out to vote - so parties vote through measures which they hope will appeal to them.

I agree with the principle, just not who's to blame for it.

this is an interesting one in the guardian

Would you seriously wish to disenfranchise the generations whose hard work and values created the Golden Age that you now look back on with affection?

See http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=63174.0

I'm more inclined to see the voting age raised than lowered, but if we ask 18yr olds to be good citizens then we should include them in the democratic process.

Most people vote with self interest in mind.  The majority of Labour votes come from those who are offered better prospects from a Labour government one way or another.  The older generation aren't some isolated selfish phenomenon.

Haha. We get some pretty short sighted and insulting blanket statements on here but this one is a doozy.

Lived their lives? What the Hell does that mean? If that's true they can't benefit from anything they vote for can they?

What's that sir, you served in the army, fought in the Falklands, started your own business and paid all your taxes for the last 30 years, and now you want to vote as well? Sorry mate, up yours.

Tell me Keith, which age group do you consider to be totally altruistic? It wouldn't be yours would it?

I would say old people are totally the opposite of voting for self interest.  I would say it is virtually impossible to get someone over 80 to change how they vote.  They have voted the same way all their life whether they were skint after the war or loaded now.  My grandparents have done both and voted the same all their life.  They have their beliefs about how the world should operate and have stuck with them throughout their lifes whether rich or poor.  Don't think they have ever voted out of self interest.

I would say the biggest group for changing how they vote through self interest are middle class students who go from voting labour/lib as students to becoming tory when they realise how much it will cost them once they have a £100k a job 15 years down the line.

They've made their money, had their families, bought their houses and got money in the bank.

They don't need tax breaks, boosts on savings rates or reduction on inheritance tax.

Young people need the money spent on bribing old people for their votes to help to buy their first house, improve education for their children and improve the NHS.

The focus of governemnt should be on the future and young people ARE the future.
