Theresa May will lead us into a bleak future – outside the single market | Martin Kettle

"Few grasp the enormity of the prime minister’s focus on border controls ahead of EU trade. It will make us all poorer"

Perhaps Corbyn will put banning after working socialising paid for by an employer into his manifesto.

He's crackers.

Corbyn just has the knack for offending even when he is been his most earnest.  Women will want to look after their children and men will like to drink, obviously?  Is this the 70s?   Sure if this was in the mail it would be ok for them to speak like this?

Sure if people just try and run their relationships a bit better then surely they can both go to after work drinks?

All this whilst the Conservatives are trying to move away from free trade.

May's strategy appears to be

- reasonably hard brexit
- mop up all ukip voters (including former traditional labour heartland defectees) who want immigration curbs
- watch labour implode
- wait for boundary changes

- landslide.

politically astute but worrying for trade/long term rposperity as you say.

That Japan releases list of Brexit warnings from its business just before G20 is highly significant -

this is first detailed account of what businesses, massive investors in UK, feel they can stomach, in or out of single market

- We knew about financial passport issue, we did not know that Japanese banks had made a clear statement via govt they might "relocate"...

- Japan's banks also calling for some sort of transition scheme or inheritance of a passport if they move from London post Brexit

The car industry references are very interesting: detail on why the single market has been essential for Japanese

I had no idea that location of the European Medicines Agency in London was so vital for international pharma:

most significant - transfer Japan inc's European HQs to "Continental Europe" if "EU laws cease to be applicable"

Cars: Japan auto sends a message to Brexit Britain via its government - we fear double whammy of tariffs:

meanwhile, almost a relief, normal politics is back

the horrendous Keith Vaz is chairman of the home affairs select committee

he's been stung by a newspaper booking prostitutes (rent boys), telling them to bring poppers etc

I'd normally say what Keith Vaz does privately is none of our concern but not given the committee positions he holds and his acts re Janner.
