I genuinely think he doesn't want to win, and would be much happier finger wagging from the back benches. An alliance with Greens and Lib Dems makes so much sense, yet all Labour can do is go after Farron instead of May.

This sums it up nicely

The whole deal about politicians 'going back on their pledge' bothers me a little because it's pretty wise to reassess strategy in the face of ever-changing variables.

One is offensive and one is defensive. Poor comparison.

What are people's feeling on the NEC's being forced to select candidates instead of the local parties. I saw the Conservatives are managing to draw up shortlists of three.  Is there something I'm missing re; holding the election in 3 months or 6 months? I have no idea how long it would normally take.

"Why did he vote no? Mr Campbell is 73 and has been treated for stomach cancer. However, he is on the road to recovery after an operation and chemotherapy. He announced earlier on Wednesday he would stand again for election as it would be the party's national executive committee who would choose his replacement rather than the local party - not something he was keen on."

May inner circle, majority of ‘35 to 40 would be absolutely fantastic’; ministers admitting anything below 50 a blow

I have decided that I will not ask Scarlett Johansson out. It would be an easy win and a personal vindication but I have other priorities.

Tactical voting to beat the Tories: does the maths equal a coalition?

Every few years, someone suggests forming a progressive coalition to beat the Conservatives. Could a Lib/Lab/Green alliance really beat Theresa May?

I don't know the backstory here, or the full ins and outs of the selection process, but the NEC can and has imposed shortlists in the past.  For instance there have been all women shortlists imposed in certain areas for a few years and local parties get suspended from producing their own shortlists.  Without the backstory it is hard to take a view on the particular case.

It seems like the real reason he's not running is because if he won he'd have to quit as an MEP and if he sticks at that until 2019 then he gets a 70% final salary pension of €6000 a month...
