Goalkeeper Alexander Doni is understood to have been released by Liverpool with immediate effect.

The experienced goalkeeper joined the Reds from Roma in a lucrative free transfer after spending six years with the Serie A club.

But he was unable to force his way ahead of Pepe Reina at Anfield, making just four Premier League appearances for Liverpool.

In fact, fellow back-up keeper Brad Jones has also seen first-team action ahead of the Brazilian relegating him to third choice.

The 33-year-old is now set to return to his homeland in a bid to force his way back into the national team ahead of next year's World Cup having last featured for his country in 2010.

Such a bad article no research done no idea why he was released.

Word is he's in a legal battle with the club over something or other. Pretty major falling out I've heard.

Too early to say if its been a good transfer window or not. Id like to see our wage bill at the each of the last 5-6 windows to see how that has changed.

More excited about Coutinho than Sturridge.

Surely our wage bill has been massively reduced...

Agree.

Primary goals for us in a window is to imrove playing staff quality, reduce wages and increase squad value. All three boxes ticked IMO.

Saw a tweet saying he had a heart attack in the summer.

This Liverpool team is finally getting close to being a real contender.

Rodgers is a genius imo.

All about Suarez you mean.

Along with Bale, the best two players in the Premier League atm.

Two good performances, and two points gained away at two decent sides. Thought today was the best all-round performance from Liverpool this season.

Still work in progress, and there will be more disappointment on the way, but definitely moving towards Rodgers' plan.

Really good to see Liverpool getting there.

Not just for the fact that they took points off City today, but also because I'd rather have a genuine rivalry with Liverpool than the sheikhdom or the oilgarch's playthings

The problem is strength in depth, or the lack of it.

A few players out the side and the team struggles. Also need to string a run of wins together now and make the run in from now till the end of the season a good one. Can definitely catch Everton if they don't revert to the side that played Villa or Oldham.

its the same in any team.. city have spent trillions but without yaya and kompany they aren't the same.

players like suso/shelvey/skrtel/sterling are really good backup players to have.

I agree there are one or two players in the squad who can step in without weakening the team dramatically, but:

1. We don't really have cover in the full-back positions.  Wisdom will be a top-notch player in a few years, but that'll be at centre-back. Same with Kelly.  If Johnson or Jose Enrique are missing, we are definitely exposed at the back.
2. If Suarez and/or Sturridge get injured/suspended, we don't have any proper forwards to step in as replacements.
3. Sterling and Shelvey will hopefully be very, very good players in a few years (Sterling especially). In the meantime we can't rely on them.
4. It seems as though the strongest centre-back partnership is currently Agger and Carragher - but Carragher isn't getting any younger and Skrtel needs to re-find his lost form. Hopefully, Kelly and Wisdom can be developed as the next centre-backs for Liverpool - and that shouldn't take years to do.
5. Henderson and Downing need to play as they have been in the last few games for the whole season, not just as cameos.

It'll take a very good window in the summer to go close to the top 4. The good news for us is everyone else is playing inconsistently as well so it doesnt seem so far away.
