I've never seen one of these in operation Pops , looking forward to when the renovation is complete.

Awesome!

I must try & get the Diary caught up, might try & do it tonight. Just had the busiest, most intense month I can recall.

Today's article is mid-upload, as we speak.

Quite a story behind it, or there is for me. Might unload my thoughts all this writing malarky later. Quite a time of life to be trying new tricks, but I love the challenge.

Just in case he vanishes into the ether for another few decades:
Let's hear what you were going to tell us about Terry Downes via Dave Charnley.

I disappeared for a few weeks Ralph, sorry.

It was something & nothing really, but Terry Downes was a bit of a hero to me in my adolescent years, for the strangest reason - I once saw him in real life.

Odd really, but we "connect" with people when we meet them, especially celebs or sporting stars. Well I do, anyway.

He was amongst the first to open Betting Shops after they were legalised (late fifties/early sixties?) & he had one in Horn Lane, Acton, right opposite Acton Main Line Station, think he had 7 or 8.

Word was, he was just a "front", & they were really owned & run by some shady sorts. No idea if that is true.

Her eventually sold the chain to Wm Hill, & made a pretty penny I believe.

I may be wrong, but I have it in my mind he was very popular with the public.

Here's an interview I found about him, dated 2011, (he's still alive & well to this day), I think you might just enjoy this.

Quite amazing, from this photo, how little he has changed.

Seems like he enjoyed his money whilst he had it, too, this, presumably, was from the sale of his Betting Shops.

I see Berkshire Hathaway shares are doing quite well, valued at $220k per share!  A decent increase from last year, owning just one share would have increased your wealth by $50k - a nice annual salary.

Only $217,118 now.

He's made a few people immensely rich, has Mr B, & made himself into one of the world's most wealthy people, too.

He's done so without alienating too many, either, which must be rare. He's still all sort of homely Nebraska.

He still lives in the same house he purchased way back in 1958.

Here he is at a recent White House State function, with Astrid by his side. The Astrid thing is an unusual story. He effectively had 2 wives, Susie, who loved him to bits (& he, her), but moved out, & Astrid, who moved in to look after him after Susie left. Astrid & Susie got on wonderfully well. Susie died some time ago, sadly.

He is said to be worth some $50 billion, all of which goes to charity - the Melissa & Bill Gates Foundation - when he eventually passes on. Warren & Bill are extremely close, almost as close as Warren & Charlie Munger. Charlie is a pragmatist, very gruff & blunt, & the 2 of them play good cop - bad cop.

I've recently read another Warren book, must be the 15th or 20th I've read about him. I saw somewhere that more books had been written about Warren Buffett than any other living person, or something like that.

Thank you Tom, & good to see you back on blonde. Hope all went well with the funeral & everything, such as it can.

I'll try & look at that later tonight - it's my first night at home, relaxing, for about a month, so I'm chilling & things.

I've got Dire Straits in Concert on right now, back from 1992, & then they (Sky Arts) have a "Queen" evening, so I'll have to have a bit of that, too. I look away when they show close ups of Brian May though, he's right up there with John Inverdale in my B-o-T.

Strange how we take against one or two for no good reason, I've never met the bloke, but he's just so "me & Freddie this", "me & Freddie that". Pretty sure he's never uttered a sentence that did not include the word "Freddie".

Reminds me of Ronnie Corbett, living off the memory of the great Ronnie Barker.

Ooh, bit of a rant-let there.

Any recommendations for reading up on PL08 game. #valueITT

Not really, Carl, there's not any books on PLO8 that really did much for me.

Just play some smalball to practice - I think you'd enjoy the game.

If you play smallball SNG's, just use standard SNG strategy, that's half of it.

I'm assuming you are a total PLO8 newbie, if not, ignore all this.

As to the game itself, again, fairly basic, or it is at my level. Once it gets to big pots, as opposed to nicking lttle ones in position to pay the rent, remember to try & play balanced hands - a good high, & a good low. Playing one or the other without the other end is fatal. Don't chase lows, either, 90% of players make that mistake. Calling another street hoping to get half - at best - is the nut daftest thing, & is where most of my profit comes from.

Middling cards are seriously dangerous, too - the 7-8-9-10 combos, which can be so good in PLO, aree deathly in PLO8, as you almost never scoop. The whole game is about scoops.

By balanced hands, I mean (ignoring suits) these sort of hands (below). Even nitty me, if I were playing at the sharp end of a WSOP PLO8 thingie, would not hesitate to go to war with these sort of hands.

  two hearts three clubs

  Two Diamonds three clubs

Really, any combo of A-2, together with a K or a Q are good.

When your stack gets a bit thin, rather than shove with an un-balanced, one way hand, widen the range at both ends. You'll be unlucky to be dominated at both ends, & even then there are plenty of ways to get lucky.   So we can widen to any K, Q or J at the top, & any 2, 3, or 4 at the bottom. But ALWAYS have an ace in your hand, ideally.  An Ace is monstrously powerful in PLO8.

I'm way too nitty, for sure, but I can play 20 or 30 £5 & £10 games in a session, & never, ever, play any hand that does not contain an ace.  I don't make much, mind, but it's impossible to lose if you follow those basics at the (up to) £10 level.

Good luck, & if you have any questions, fire away here, or ask someone who knows what they are talking about on PHA.

How is the motorbike? All revved up & polished for the Spring?

Some crackers there, Tighty.

You'd not give this a second look in real life, or even think about it. It's just a wasp.

But just look at that detail. How nature comes up with stuff like that I'll never even begin to comprehend.

I'll reply to that next, David. Been dying to do so ever since you posted.

Great article that Tony most enjoyable.

I had completely forgotten about his "perishing hooter" until my memory was jogged but he was certainly a very good and popular fighter. I  remember those betting shops which he allegedly fronted for some serious villains, but that sort of thing was commonplace in the 1960's when gambling first became legal.

Do you recall The Colony Club fronted by Gearge Raft for Meyer Lansky, and Charlie Chester's casino in Soho?

http://www.venetian.com/assets/DSE_III_2015-Schedule.pdf

Cornwall bloke, how are you Robert?

Great to see you here.

Some great stuff there, that's just potentially added $4,600 to my "ooh yes, want to play that" list. Guess I might have to swerve the 2 x $1,100 events, bit rich for me to flick it in, though I'd love to play both. It has the only Big O Tourney I've seen in this summer's schedules, too, & @ $600, I'll be OK with that one.

The good thing is it gives me a firm start date which I can now try to plan around - 30th May.

You still getting the lot in the 4 & 5 card games on Party?

Don't be a stranger Rob, be great to keep in touch better.

For those not familiar, Rob & I hook up every year in Vegas, we play all the same stuff, though we play it very differently, he's mad daft aggro. Away from Vegas, our paths have never crossed, or not that I recall. I ran out of cash in Vegas one year, there's a thing, & was struggling to transfer cash from the UK. Robert just stuck $5,000 in my hand & said "sort it out when you get home". Proper bloke.

I have a bit of a challenging few days in prospect today & tomorrow, but that's cheered me up no end.

oioi

Wait a minute - is he Doobs in disguise?

For those who enjoy poker Blogs, here's Rob's effort. Seems he is on 'Stars now. He plays full time, just PLO & PLO8 I think.

rfqqbhhjyurfdghgukytuyrytfd probably knows of him.
