Thewy gets back from Vegas today, where he went to play the WPT affair, which turned out to be a damp-squib for him.

He hung with Jim McShane for a bit, & they both played yesterday's $340 jobbie at The Venetian. With two Tables left, G-B Thewy had nearly 20% of the chips in play. He eventually Finalled lowish (he's hopeless) & ducked & dived to finish 4th for $4,500.

We should consider handicapping him.

I think he plans to play Manchester GUKPT now. Living the Dream.

He was Sponsored into the $25k WPT by William Hill.

Paid himself into the $340 Venetian, & gets to keep the lot. He's golden.

I asked him how he came to run up such a huge stack. "Oh, I just gave it plenty of welly"......

So, I decided to swerve the Manchester-G Omaha, & I came home from Manchester, & had a lovely scenic drive across Woodhead Pass, which cheered me up a great deal after the pith of Mamcherster City Centre. There's some stunning scenery over Woodhead, & enormous natural reservoirs which give the impression of being on top of hills, which they clearly cannot be.

2 Comps, 2 blanks, plus the cost of 2 nights in a Hotel, & only one profitable night last week has left the day-to-day bankroll a bit battered & bruised, & I need to grind a bit & replenish. I should have Finalled Sunday night in the £100 at DTD, but messed up & paid the price, so confidence was a bit low.

Played the £100 Omaha at DTD last night - it's now, by agreement with the Players, a single rebuy or add-on, & 20 runners - the best field so far - produced a £3,800 kitty. None of which came my way, as I exited early in the Final in a typical Omaha all-in-pre Aces v Jumble Sale affair. Big pot, too, but them's the breaks.

Field included all the usuals, including Kiim Costa, Pete Costa (up to 27k early, but failed to final), Tracey Dell (busted by Pete Costa), Basha, Doc Makawana, Simon Nowab, Latif, Pete Linton, etc.

At about 4am, with the remaining three chip stacks just about Level they did a DTD-dtyle chop, & all took about £1,100 I think. The smartly-suited Nick Watchorn, a Broadway & now DTD regular, Doc Makawana & Latif took the spoils, with Pete conduit 4th for £380.

Considerable debate ensued during the evening. The comp is very well structured, & it took from 9.15pm until 4am to complete. Some said that's way too long, & was "boring", others thought it was as good an evening's poker fun as could be had. Each to their own, but personally, I cant recall a scheduled Tournie which plays in such a nice spirit, & I love that comp, small as it is. To me, it's an education in Omaha, much of it short-handed, so you can't duck the action.

Huige excitement about next week's Norweigan Omaha Event, but I don't think I can play it, due to diary committments. Money in gets priority over money out.....

So, potless & penniless, & on a bad run, I ummed & arred whether to take a seat in the £5 £5 DC. Looked a very playable table, but I had no cash on me, so I went to the CashPoint. "Card Declined". What? Do they know who .....

And I'm stood looking at the damn machine, as you would at a Bank Clerk, "WHAT?".

And at that moment, someone tapped me on the Shoulder. I'm always wary when I get that "tap" whilst at a cash-machine, & my anti-nip defences were at the ready, but I had a great excuse - "look, no money".....

I turned around, & it was Richard Berridge. Richard & I have known each other from our Gala days, & we had a bit of a to-do back then, caused by a mischief-maker of ill-repute, but we made our peace then, we've moved on, & I get along fine with him these days. We are different sorts entirely, in so many ways, two poker guys doing their own thing differently. He's a businessman, & I like to chit-chat business.

But that's all - we meet at poker Tables, an acquaintance.

So I was a bt taken aback when he said "don't worry, I've got some cash, here, take £400, give it me back when I next see you".

Well, I did not know what to say. I don't borrow money, ever. I might trade some cash between a very small bunch of close friends, but I feel uncomfortable borrowing. I might tap Tom or Chili or Thewy for £200 or £300 now & then, if I'm "caught short" one night, but that's it.

I did not quite know what to say. But he was insistent, & I had a need, so I accepted, with gratitude. And immediately felt awful. There are a whole bunch of reasons why I don't like being loaned money, but my principles seemed to desert me suddenly.

I wandered across to the DC Table, & took my seat. And then realised that £400 was wholly inadequate for this table, & of course I had no "pull-up" in my pocket. "What am I doing here?" I'm thinking. Greed, & desire to enjoy myself I suppose.

I decide to play very warily. No choice with only £400 in my lucy.

The table included Kim Costa, Pete Linton, Mick McCool, Basha, Gino, (not Luton Gino), & a few others. So the Pots could easily get big here. There's so much luck & variance in DC, & it's amazing how money gets sucked into Pots. Mick McCool has been on a long winning streak recently, Pete Linton is never afraid to shove, Basha ditto. This is a bad idea. Oh well.

We play Hi-Lo 6 card first hand, & I get to see the flop cheaply. I'm holding.....

  Two Clubs

We take this flop....

So I'm involved already, & there's a bet fom Mick, called in 2 spots. Call. Yes, I know, I SHOULD shove here, but my mini-stack has no power, & anyway, I'm a wimp. It's SO much easier to shove here - play properly - when you have Cash behind.

It's a dream turn, a low club, & Mick bets out, one Caller, & now I have to shove. Mick calls, the other Passes. The Jack pairs on the end - eek! - but it's OK, & I get three quarters, as we chopped the low. Lovely start!

I tangle with Mick again a few hands later. His recent "Form" has reversed, & he's missing flops for England, but he's still busy, & aggressive, a right handful.

We play 6 Hi-Lo again, & I'm dealt  Two Clubs - a corker, & almost against my better judgement, & usual timidity, I play it strongly. It's Raised early, called by everyone, & I pot it, £200. Mick & Basha both call, the rest run for cover.

The flop was as bad as it could be for me -

The Pot is about £750, & Mick & Basha are both short. I'm first to speak, what to do?

Well, £750 in the middle, I have about £300 behind, Mick & Basha about £150 or £200 each. Hard to Pass with so much in the middle, & I need runner-runner probably, though I have other outs.

I check, praying for a free turn, but they ain't playing soft-ball, & in it goes. Shit. My heart sunk, but I feel I have to call here. It was £170 I think.

I am just focused on one thing - two low cards, PLEASE.

And low they came - offfsuit 7, offsuit 8. Phew, I got the low locked up! And completely missed the straight I'd also runner-runnered, until Kim pointed it out. Doc Makawana, Railing, saw it too,. but Table Etiquette meant he had to stay schtum. I certainly never saw it. Mick chopped the Low with me, but it was still a lovely Pot. In which I runner-runnered the High. And runner-runnered the Low. How lucky was that? As I was constantly reminded for the rest of the night. Can't complain really.

Two more "scoops" followed, & so it all ended nicely for me, & I booked a 4 figure profit, my first for an age.

The final hand of the night was Super-Stud, & I had a monster. But I sensed a huge "let's gamble" pot developing (& it did) & I bailed out, as the "let's not be greedy" default kicked in.

All thanks to borrowing money, which I loathe, & an act of kindness. Thank you Mr Berridge. I shal repay him his £400 when I next see him, & buy him a proper drink. Good, this borrowing lark. Don't tell my Dad though, he'd kill me.

The 'papers report today that Rice is in short supply, so much so that Tesco & Asda are rationing supplies in some UK Stores. Whatever will we do?

The commodoties markets have forecast this for some time. The wholesale price for basic foodstuff commodities - rice, wheat, soya beans, maize, corn, have all trebled in the last 18 months. Trebled!

It's become a life-threatening situation in parts of India, Kenya, & even Brazil, where many just can't afford food.

But it's a real worry now that our Rice is rationed in Tesco's in Derby. No rice pudding? It's just not good enough.

It's one of those things that are not really defined. I think - I'm not sure - that decorum suggests that if one is not at the Table, in most cases, one should stay schtum I think. Doc Makawana, by the way, is a perfect Gent, & a good friend, & he considered it "not done" to say anything. Kim spotted it anyway, (he was at the table) & mentioned it immediately, so Doc did not find himself in the awkward spot of having to decide whether to speak or not. Doc spoke to me afterwards & wondered how on earth I'd missed it. Good question.....

I disagree but tbh right now I'm struggling to put into words exactly why, I'm sure someone else can do that for me. imo a railer should speak up if a pot is incorrectly awarded. who has won a pot at shoedown is not a subjective matter and at times there's a lot of money at stake

If you are on the rail it is not your game. The dealer and everyone else at the table should be the only ones to speak IMO..
