I felt lucky to have heard it Tom, we flicked on the radio in the car and it was programmed to Radio 4 as I had been listening to a little cricket earlier, so just left it on and listened to the show. It made me realise how good radio is, I mean you could read the transcript of that interview and James reading his poem but his struggling for breath and the feeling he showed just wouldn't come across.

I really dislike the way that news is used these days, A kind of excuse to provide entertainment 24 hours a day and maybe that is one of the reasons that a reputable news station can broadcast the supposed names of 4 pilots in a serious crash without first making sure they are correct and secondly not seeing what they were broadcasting. Fine if it is rolling sports non news on SSN but now real, serious news is treated the same way. Almost like episodes in soap opera's or fictional drama in some cases

I've vowed to buy myself a good radio for my office and instead of hours of background noise from bad sports news channels and the same 30 minute news with a different tint on the news channels I am going to listen to so much more interesting things. That Pick of the week link featured some really interesting stuff about Shirley Williams, cricket and covered a fear of sabotage to the Olympic opening ceremony. All really interesting stuff.

I'm a huge Radio 4 fan Phil.

On a related and even more interesting subject for you, why aren't more roads made of concrete?

The M271 in Southampton is mostly concrete and seems to have been pretty much repair free for as long as I can remember.

Ooohhhhh.

Ashphalt does not melt as such, it cannot liquify, but it does soften in high temperatures, though only to the wearing course (described in the article as the surface layer).

The sub base subsides though, due to contraction of the sub surface in dry weather.

Never happens with concrete paved road surfaces though. Concrete rocks, see?

Can't remember if I read about this here or somewhere else but have you heard about the Pitch Drop experiment?

The summary is in 1927 a professor melted some pitch and poured it into a sealed funnel.  He let it settle for 3 years and then cut it open to let it 'flow'.

The first drip fell 8 years after opening the funnel.  The last drop to fall was the 8th in 2000.

From the wiki page pitch has a viscosity approximately 230 billion times that of water!

ahhhh yeh that sound is always so annoying when you move from a non thump thump road.

99% of us are recreationals, we just want to enjoy the game, a fact far too often overlooked.

I'll be writing a full Vegas TR soon, but it was just wonderful, & I'd do anything to be able to return & repear the whole experience.

Sort of, yes.

Grandad Angell used to take me, alternately, to Stamford Bridge (Jimmy Greaves, Peter Bonetti, the Sillett brothers, Chopper,), & Craven Cottage (Johnny Haynes), then when I was old enough, I often went to Loftus Road (Terry Venables, Rodney & Co), WHL (Danny Blanchflower, Bill Nicholson was a God) & The Boleyn (Geoff, Martin & Bobby) so I was spoilt really.

Then I met a girl, & she was a Brentford fan, so my fate was sealed really, & I followed the Bees home & away for 10 or 15 years. Away games at the likes of Plymouth & Barrow, especilly on a Friday night, were quite something.

They are still the result I look for first, & young Rosler has worked miracles there.

I likle the Arsenal, too. Actually, I can't say I dislike ANY team, there's much enjoyment to be had from having no real affiliation.

I do think football needs to get its house in order in so many ways, but I still enjoy it.

The Baseball game I went to in Vegas was different gravy, such a lovely atmosphere & they work so hard to engage everyone. Want a burger or a hot dog? No problem, no queues, & dirt cheap.

A few of the Umpires decisions were a bit dubious, but the players respected authority, as they should, & must. The lack of respect for authority in football is shameful, & an indictment on the ruling bodies.

I blame this man for much of it.......
