On a wider point

How can you judge how intelligent a footballer is/isnt from watching them and made up stories in tabloids?

You cant

Of course you can't. But you can get a reasonable impression from interviews they do. That's all I said. I can't speak for Barry.

It could, of course, be that they are taught to say bland inanities in media training. And doubtless they are to an extent. But it's so rare even with ex-players on TV you hear anything more than lowest common denominator lad banter. That said anyone who dares to break out of this mould seems to get ridiculed so you can't blame them.

People tend to confuse education with intelligence.

And tend to confuse one person's opinion with another's.

I said they came across like children and as if they didn't have a thought in their head.

Being removed from education at an early age would definitely be a factor in that as you would only gain a very limited view of the world and of other people (although as someone said earlier that is likely not the case these days). This is then exacerbated by the football bubble.

But to be fair that's all just massive guesswork and assumptions on my part.

The only thing I know is true is this, I find almost without exception that when I hear a British footballer interviewed I gain nothing from it apart from a faint sense of despair.

I suppose I broadly agree with you Alun, and even though I know I'm guilty of it myself, I always seem to want to pick people up when the make sweeping generalisations.

Oh I know I let Camel get away with it, but he's a lost cause.  

Haha! No you're right. It's a bad habit, and I am as guilty of it as anyone.

In this specific case though I really didn't mean they were thick. I meant they seemed to lack depth, or insight or worldliness I guess.

But hey, it's not like they are my best friends so maybe they do and just treat us all like the ignorant clowns we are.

I think its always going to be like this for the vast majority of sportsmen and women who have to immerse themselves in a sport at a young age in order to succeed.

Great expression that, "mood hoover". I know a few of those, some are even Dyson quality. I sat next to one on a flight to Vegas one year, sheesh, was the longest 10 hours of my life.

Yes back when I had a proper job at Aviva one of the managers shared the term with me and it instantly struck a chord. Misery loves company and all that, and there were a lot of them at Aviva despite being, IMO, a pretty good employer.

I remember once we were all told in a meeting "Guess what, because we had a really good year, everyone in the company is getting an extra £300 of company shares."

Rather than celebrate, what followed was a one hour wingeathon because we A) had to pay tax on them and B) couldn't withdraw them for the first two years.

I eventually stood up and said 'It's free money!' and everyone looked at me like I had crossed a picket line.

Mood hoovers.

We should not forget it's a two way street - sportsmen must look at us & think "they have no idea how to kick a ball" or whatever.

It's so easy to diss everyone & everything.

You should see the abuse heaped on Sky Poker (or, I assume, any other online poker site) over Freerolls. I doubt any topic causes more angst. And those who shout loudest deposit the least, of course.

One guy Next Door waged a relentless hate campaign, & yet he had never deposited a penny on the site.

"What happened to our freerolls, it's a disgrace, sort it out!!!!!!!".

The day I depart, assuming I'm still breathing, I'm gonna reply to all these guys.

Only 30 minute episodes so easy to catch up.

It was ok really bit tiresome at times, food was fine for some reason i had put on weight originally despite being nil by mouth for neigh on 2 weeks but they figured out that in the end (hopefully).

Didnt help i then picked up an infection a few weeks back one upside of that is you get a nice side room which was not far off a travelodge bedroom.

Hope all is good with you. 
I read with interest that Gill had taken up running as many years ago whilst a personal trainer in my twenties I was approached by a lady in her 50's who hadn't run more than a couple of miles in her life before and wanted training to run a marathon within 6 months when she was going to New York.

Could you confirm whether running will be part of this years training regime for your good self pre Vegas like last year?

Peter Kay could literally just stand in a living room watching paint dry and people would say it was great.

Think Cradle to Grave is at best a 5/10, and I'm being kind, Car Share was the same, really don't understand the love for either show.

I'm a fan of Peter Kay as well, his stand up was great and I loved many of the earlier tv programs he did.
